Camp Croft, South Carolina
US Army Infantry Replacement Training Center

Most of the Camp Croft photos below were taken by the official post photographer, Edward A. Beeks, and show platoon or company sized groups of trainees and cadre close to the end of a training cycle.

One excellent photo that does not fit that category is the one to the right.  It was taken aboard the USS Wakefield while enroute to the European Theater after December 1944. The men in this image had just received their basic training at Croft and all were from Philadelphia, PA. All of the men made it through the war.

As C. Del Giudice relates, he is in "... the second row, 1st on right, next to me is Cherberko (The Mad Russian)
from Pennsylvania. Captain Burke (later Colonel) is in the center.
Second row and 3rd from left is Sgt. Sloane,
Kentucky followed by Jim McKenzie from New Jersey.
Bob Killian of Conn. is 1st row 3rd from left. Guys with white
hats are cadre.
The best group that we had. Many were from Eastern Conn. and signed the rear of the picture."

"I have been doing some digging through old photos and found one of me and the 2nd Platoon, A Company, 30th Battalion
taken in July 1942 which I thought you might like to have.  I'm in the front row, fifth from the left.  Our platoon sergeant is
behind my right shoulder.  I do wish I could remember his name, he was a great non-com.  My best buddy during this
machine gun training was John Anderson Dow.  He's in the third row, all the way to the end on the right facing the photo"
