Camp Croft, South Carolina
US Army Infantry Replacement Training Center

From a single small building and a staff of five in February 1941, the Station Hospital at Camp Croft expanded to 67 buildings covering more than 60 acres and employed 975 officers, nurses, and detachment personnel. The hospital boasted modern medical equipment and 801 beds (nearby Spartanburg General Hospital only had 293 beds). The camp medical facilities also included two modern dental clinics.

While it could be somewhat pleasurable to recuperate in the company of the female nurses, a trainee who missed too much training while in the station hospital ran the risk of having to repeat the entire training cycle!

Notice any similarities between this post card view and the one at the top of the page? A clever artist
removed some of the vehicles, redrew the buildings, and transformed it into a night time view!
Before the facelift ...
... and after!
"Sick Call is held every morning in your company. If you are sick, or feel that you need medical attention, tell your platoon sergeant and he will have you report to your orderly room at this time. Your name will be placed on the Sick Report and you will be taken to a dispensary for examination and treatment by an experienced physician. This procedure is followed except in cases of emergency, when immediate medical attention is given.

Medical men are on duty at all times in these dispensaries and will take care of minor injuries and arrange for hospitalization of serious cases.

If you are told at the dispensary that you are to be sent to the Station Hospital, you will be allowed to return to your barracks to secure your toilet articles. Everything else - pajamas, bathrobe, slippers, towels - will be furnished you at the Hospital. The Station Hospital here at [the post] is a thoroughly modern institution, staffed by trained doctors, nurses, and technicians. You will receive the best possible medical care there."  --- from the "Information Hand Book For The Soldier - IRTC, Fort McClellan, Alabama", c1944
