5. LANDING BARGES by TYPE & NUMBER; THE WARTIME
FATE OF THOSE LOST
Only landing
barges identified in the sources are included;
"ditto" is only used when the available
information is precisely the same as the immediately
preceding landing barge. Much data is therefore
duplicated, but
...........
each barge deserves to be remembered in this way!
Background Loss and
Other Notes:
1. For the passage to
Normandy, June 1944, some barges were towed over,
most sailed under their own power, some broke down
and were towed the rest of way. Barges were seen
drifting and in some cases abandoned. The main
problem was engine failure due to shipping water, but
also loss of rudder (WB).
2. On the passage
over, west to north-westerly winds were Force 5 to 4,
waves up to 6ft. Barges were wallowing/rolling and
shipping water. Some were swamped and sank, including
one unidentified LBV south from the Isle of Wight.
Only one barge heading for Utah was lost in the rough
seas. In summary, what were "London river barges (doing)
crossing the English Channel in that
weather?" (BS.39/WB)
3. On arrival off
Normandy, the LBOs, LBWs, LBKs,
LBEs anchored off the beaches or beached, and
were soon in business fuelling, watering, feeding and
repairing, often under heavy fire; the LBVs
landed their cargoes and commenced the ship-to-shore
ferry duties they normally engaged in as civilian
river lighters (WB).
4. The June 1944 gales
developed in outline as follows Friday 16th,
weather started to deteriorate; Saturday 17th,
northerly winds force 4; Sunday 18th, wind
strengthening; Monday 19th by midday, north-easterly
force 7 and up to gale force 8 for three days and
nights; Thursday 22nd, wind began to
moderate. With the winds from the NE, no part of the
Normandy beachhead was sheltered, but the US sectors
suffered most because the Mulberry Harbour was
incomplete. One unidentified LBE sank off Utah beach
in the gales and the crew rescued by a US LCA
(BS.39/WB).
5. By D+30, landing
barge losses (damaged sufficiently to require
assistance) were 8 LBVs (48 damaged), 9
LBOs (20), no LBWs (4), 5 LBEs (16)
(BS.39)
6. At the end of
August, LBE.5 and an unidentified LBO & LBV or W
were in tow by a Dutch tug back to England in a gale.
The LBO & LBV or W tows broke, and one sank with
the loss off two men (WB).
7. In late October
1944, the 37th LB (S&R) Flotilla was in a south
of England port, possibly Langstone, preparing to
sail for Belgian/Holland. Many of the LBWs and
LBOs were in a "shocking condition"
and some were immediately written off (WB)
8. By the end of 1944,
landing barge losses since January totalled
approximately 58 from all causes around 35
LBVs, 10 LBOs, 4 LBWs, 7 LBE, 3 LBR
(ramped) (HMSO).

LBV.229,
reported in HMSO that by March 1944, "dumb"
LBV (Mk1)s 229, 266 (150t type, total 2) were
reported lost, cause and place unknown, but
presumably in British waters. According to WB,
LBV.229 sailed with 12th LBV Flotilla (12 LBV) from
Poole for US Omaha beach (H)(wb)
LBV.230, 20th
LBV Flotilla (12 LBV) from Poole for US Utah beach

LBV.232, 11th
LBV Flotilla (12 LBV) from Poole for US Omaha beach.
LBV.232's coxswain was Petty Officer G H Mountjoy
with 7 crew. In the gales of 19th-22nd June, LBV (Mk
2)s 172, 176, 206, 232 (200t type, total 4)
were written off charge as a result of damage; loss
dates given as 19th-25th June. (H)(39/br/wb)

LBV.236, 13th
LBV Flotilla (12 LBV) from Yarmouth for Gold (wb)
LBV.237, 16th
LBV Flotilla (12 LBV) from Langstone Harbour,
possibly allocated to Juno beach, but more likely
Sword. BS.39 assigns the 16th to Sword beach. However
LBV.237 of the Flotilla was damaged off Gold in the
gales! She broached to on the beach and filled. All
the crew got ashore and later dried her out (39/wb)
LBV.238, 5th

Sword beach (wb)
LBV.239, 9th
LBV Flotilla (12 LBV) from Poole for US Omaha beach

LBV.240, 15th
LBV Flotilla (12 LBV) from Chichester/Yarmouth for
Gold. In September 1944, the crew returned home and
15th Flotilla barges transferred to British Army RASC
(wb)
LBV.266,
reported in HMSO that by March 1944, "dumb"
LBV (Mk1)s 229, 266 (150t type, total 2) were
reported lost, cause and place unknown, but
presumably in British waters. In WB, LBV.266 is
listed as taking part on D-day (H)
LBV.367
("dumb" Mark 1, 150t type), wrecked 17/1/44
on passage from Dartmouth, Devon to Portland, Dorset,
S England. By this time, the barge flotillas were
working-up for D-day, including long coastal voyages
and frequent loading and beaching exercises (H)(wb)
LBV.417,
renumbered, new number not known (wb)
LBV.470, ditto
LBV.494, ditto
LBV.497,
reported in HMSO that "dumb" LBV
(Mk1)s 136, 149, 497 (150t type, total 3) were
lost February 1944, cause and place unknown, but
presumably in British waters. According to WB, the
"powered" LBVs 136, 149 (497s
engine-status not known) were part of 18th LBV
Flotilla (12 LBV) sailing from Poole for US Omaha
beach, lost date, cause and place unknown. BS.39
lists the 19th & 20th Flotillas, bound for
Utah, as each lacking four of their complement of 12
LBVs; although there was no such shortage in
18th Flotilla. Presumably barges lost by one flotilla
before D-day were replaced in some instances by
transfers from other flotillas (H)(39/wb)
Landing
Barge Water (LBW)
LBW.1, 34th LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 10 LBO, 2 LBW, 2 LBK,
refuelling trawlers) from Poole for US Utah beach.
According to WB, in the gales of 19th-22nd June,
LBW.1, coxswain Ernie Ironmonger, was fully loaded
with little freeboard, overwhelmed by wind and waves,
and went down off Utah beach. All the crew appear to
have been saved. However, HMSO reports that by June
1945, LBWs 1, 6 (150t type, total 2) had been
written off. Presumably LBW.1 was either salvaged,
put back in operation and written off later, or it
took a year for her loss to be recorded, by which
time the reason was no longer known (H)(wb)
LBW.2, 31st LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 10 LBO, 2 LBW, 1 LBK, 1
LCE, refuelling trawlers) from Langstone Harbour for
Juno beach (wb)
LBW.3, 37th LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 10 LBO, 2 LBW, 1 LBK, 1
LCE, refuelling trawlers) from Langstone Harbour for
Juno beach (wb)
LBW.4, 34th LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 10 LBO, 2 LBW, 2 LBK,
refuelling trawlers) from Poole for US Utah beach.
Neither HMSO, BS.39 or WB list LBW.4 as lost off
Normandy. However, LB lists an Able Seaman lost on
D-day with no known grave, and eight days later on
14/6/44 two Able Seamen and a Stoker lost and buried
at Bayeux War Cemetery, and three more Able Seaman
with no known grave. This would suggest she was lost
with most of her crew on D+8 (br/wb)
LBW.5, 30th LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 10 LBO, 2 LBW, 1 LBK, 1
LCE, refuelling trawlers) from Langstone Harbour,
half to Sword, half to Juno beaches (wb)
LBW.6, 33rd LB
(S&R) Flotilla (3 LBE, 10 LBO, 1 LBW, fuelling
trawler) from Poole for US Utah beach. Reported in
HMSO that by June 1945, LBWs 1, 6 (150t type,
total 2) had been written off. No further details,
although some written-off barges ended up in France
and the Low Countries (H)(wb)
LBW.7, 32nd LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 9 LBO, 2 LBW, 1 LBK,
refuelling trawlers) from Poole for US Omaha beach.
In the gales of 19th-22nd June, LBW.7 (150t type) was
written off charge as a result of damage; loss date
given as 19th-25th June (H)(39/wb)
LBW.8, 32nd LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 9 LBO, 2 LBW, 1 LBK,
refuelling trawlers) from Poole for US Omaha beach. A
Leading Seaman was lost on D+8; he is buried at
Bayeux War Cemetery, Normandy (br/wb)
LBW.9, 31st LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 10 LBO, 2 LBW, 1 LBK, 1
LCE, refuelling trawlers) from Langstone Harbour for
Juno beach (wb)
LBW.10, 36th LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 or 7 LBE, 10 LBO, 2 LBW, 1 LBK,
1 LCE, refuelling trawlers) from Chichester for Gold
beach (wb)
LBW.11, 38th LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 10 LBO, 2 LBW, 1 LBK, 1
LCE, refuelling trawlers) from Yarmouth, Isle of
Wight for Gold beach. LBW.11 (150t type) was lost
12/9/44, cause and place unknown. An Able Seaman was
lost on the same date with no known grave (H)(wb)
LBW.12, 35th LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 10 LBO, 2 LBW, 1 LBK, 1
LCE, refuelling trawlers) from Langstone Harbour for

LCE, refuelling trawlers) from Langstone Harbour for
Sword beach (wb)
LBW.14, 30th LB
(S&R) Flotilla (6 LBE, 10 LBO, 2 LBW, 1 LBK, 1
LCE, refuelling trawlers) from Langstone Harbour,
half to Sword, half to Juno beaches. LBW.14 (150t
type) was lost 27/8/44 (H) or 29/8/44 (wb), cause and
place unknown (H)(wb)
LBW.15, 39th LB
(S&R) Flotilla (8 LBE, 4 LBO, 3 LBW, 1 LBK,
refuelling trawlers) from Poole for US Omaha beach.
In the gales of 19th-22nd June, LBW.15 (200t type)
was written off charge as a result of damage; loss
date given as 19th-25th June (H)(39/wb)
LBW.16, 37th LB
