M-Class destroyer ordered from Fairfield at Govan
with the 1939 Programme on 7th July 1939 with HMS MUSKETEER of the same Class. Both ships were
laid down on 7th December 1939. This ship was
launched on 2nd March 1942 as the 6th RN ship to carry the name which was first introduced in 1781 for a 6th Rate. It was last used in 1899 for a “B” Class (30
Knotter) destroyer by a mine in the Channel on 23rd March 1917. This ship
was transferred to the Polish Navy after launching and renamed ORP ORKAN. She was commissioned
for service in late 1942 and had been adopted by the civil community of St Helens,
Lancashire after a successful WARSHIP
WEEK National Savings campaign in March 1942.

Group to re-inforce defence against U-Boats

Following
interception of radio transmissions from U378 by HMS MUSKETEER the
position of the
submarine was obtained and an attack on Support Group using acoustic
T5 torpedo
failed to hit HMS MUSKETEER.
8th Under attack by U378 and hit by
acoustic torpedo in position 56.30N 26.25W,
SW of
Iceland.
Ship sank
within five minutes with heavy loss of life as only 44 of the ship’s
company were
rescued by the other ships of SG3. For details see the above
references.
Commanding Officer was Commander S. Hryniewiecki who was
Senior Officer
of 3rd British Support Group.
(Note : U378
was sunk on 20th October 1943 by an aircraft from the US Escort
Aircraft Carrier USS CARD.

The Royal Navy identity
HMS MYRMIDON had been carried forward later during WW2 when an ALGERINE Class
Minesweeper built in Canada was launched in October 1944. This warship was
completed on 7th July 1945
but did not enter operational service until after VJ Day. She was deployed for
mine clearance operations
before being reduced to Reserve status in February 1948. Placed on the Disposal
List in 1958 and
sold to BISCO she arrived in tow at Briton Ferry for demolition by TW Ward on
2nd December 1958.
