QUILLIAM-Class Fleet Destroyer ordered in
December 1940 with the 3rd Emergency Flotilla from J S White of
Cowes IoW. The ship was laid down on
6th February 1941 and launched on 11th April 1942 as the first RN
warship to carry the name. Completion was delayed until
30th September 1942 due to air raid damage in the shipyard. Build cost was £436,769 but excluded cost of equipment
supplied by the Admiralty such as armament, wireless and radar . After a
successful WARSHIP WEEK National Savings campaign during March 1942 she was adopted by the
civil community of St Pancras in Greater London. On completion this Fleet
Destroyer was transferred on loan to the Royal Australian Navy who manned the
ship.
