Ex USS EDWARDS (Type A - BURNHAM Class) built by Bethlehem Steel at Squantum and launched on 10th October 1918. Transferred under UK/US Lease Land Agreement and commissioned at Halifax, Nova Scotia into the RN service as HMS BUXTON on 8 October 1940. She was the first RN warship having this name, which like other TOWN Class , is shared by towns In the UK and USA.

                18th        Arrived Newfoundland with defects.

                                Returned to Halifax for repair.

March                    Nominated for local convoy escort on completion.

                3rd          Escorted convoy from Halifax to Bermuda.

April                       Deployed on escort duty with local Canadian convoys based at Halifax.

August                  Taken in hand for refit at Boston, Mass.. USA.

 

September             On completion resumed local convoy escort.

 

October                  Nominated for duty with 6th Escort Group based at Liverpool for escort of North Atlantic

                                convoys.

                                Took passage as part of escort for Troop Convoy TC14.

                                On arrival withdrawn from service for refit and Modification

 

November              Under refit by HM Dockyard Chatham.

                                Sustained structural damage during work-up and taken in hand for repair.

 

April                       Under repair prior to service with 6th British Escort Group.

 

May                        Joined Group at Liverpool for Atlantic convoy escort.

 

June                        Deployed in NW Approaches with Group.

to                            Nominated for service with Royal Canadian Navy in western Atlantic.

July.

 

August                  Transferred to RCN Western Local Escort Force based at Halifax.

 

September             Deployed In astern Atlantic for convoy defence

HMS BUXTON was sold far breaking up in  Baltimore on 21st March 1946 and taken in tow to the breaker’s yard later that year. This ship had an undistinguished war record with bot RN and RCN, punctuated by frequent periods under repair.
