R-Class
Patrol submarine ordered on 28th January 1929 from HM Dockyard Chatham and laid
down on
24th July
1929. This submarine was launched on 14th May 1930 and was the 9th RN
warship to bear the name which
was introduced in 1808. It had previously been used by a cruiser built in 1891
and transferred to Canada in 1910.
Build was completed on 18th January 1932 and this submarine was then
commissioned for service in
the 4th Submarine Flotilla for service on the China Station where she was deployed until 1940.
