SICILY 1943 - SABANG 1944
First use of
this named by RN and completed in February 1943. She was nominated
for service in the Mediterranean on completion of work-up and
deployed for interception patrols against supply traffic.
In July she
took part in the allied assault on Sicily and carried out patrol to
prevent interference by Italian surface craft against convoys to the
landing areas. In August 1943 she was transferred with the 4th
Submarine Flotilla for service with the Eastern Fleet and was based
at Colombo for patrol duties.
These duties apart from interception of coastal shipping
off Burma, Siam and in the Malacca Straits included landing of
intelligence parties. In one series of SOE landings were
carried out in Siam during November 1943, January 1944 and February
1944 (Operations SHADE I, SHADE II and SHADE III). In the
January 1944 patrol she attacked and damaged the Japanese cruiser
KITAGAMI off Penang and later in May that
year sank a supply ship in the Malacca Straits. Before carrying out
Air Sea Rescue duties during allied air attacks on Sabang with HMS TANTIVY (Operation CRIMSON), she
carried out interception patrols against German submarines carrying
stores and passengers to and from the Far East. In June she missed
U1062 which was on passage to France.
Eastern Fleet
duties with the Flotilla continued until 1945 when she returned to
UK. Commanding Officer was Lieutenant Ridgeway
