U-Class
coastal submarine ordered with HM
Submarine UNA from HM Dockyard, Chatham on 4th September 1939 and
laid down on 1st January 1940. This
submarine intended to be named P31 was launched on 30th December
1940 as the 3rd RN warship to carry the name which had been
introduced in 1788 when
the 1st Rate 100 gun was renamed ROYAL JAMES, and last used by
a destroyer built in
1917 and sold in 1930. Build of this new submarine
was completed on 10th July 1941 and she had been commissioned for
service with the 5th Submarine Flotilla during Acceptance
Trials

Acceptance Trials prepared for service in Home waters with 3rd
Submarine Flotilla based in the Clyde.
19th Whilst on passage to
Clyde for Flotilla service accidentally rammed off the Wash and
sunk
by HM Trawler PETER HENDRIKS which was part of escort of Convoy FS44.
