“ALGERINE” Class Fleet Minesweeper fitted with Turbine
propulsion machinery ordered on 30th April 1942 from Harland and Wolff, Belfast. Laid down on 20th April 1943 at the same time as
sister ships RECRUIT and RIFLEMAN she was launched on 29th September 1943 The
fourth RN ship to carry this name, introduced in 1856 for a Steam Tender. sold in 1858. It was last used for a destroyer
built in 1916 by Scotts at Greenock and sold in 1921. Her build was completed
on 10th December 1943. This minesweeper was not “adopted” by any civil
community in UK following a successful WARSHIP WEKK campaign for National
Savings as her build had not been started.

and to provide assistance during NEPTUNE.)
Deployed with Flotilla
for exercises including night sweeping and major
exercise FABIUS III in
Bracklesham Bay.

III Flotilla came under E-Boat attack.)
Returned to Solent ion

passage on 23rd HMS PINCHER sighted and engaged U300 on the
surface
with HMS RECRUIT. The submarine then scuttleda and 41 survivors
were
rescued by ships of the escort.)

were successively withdrawn from service for refit and
maintenance pending support of planned British landings in the Andamans
and
Malaya. Some of the ships went to Durban or Port Elizabeth in South Africa.)

by four destroyers of East Indies Fleet. Dan laying was
carried
out by RIN minesweepers.)
24th HMS SQUIRREL damaged by detonation of
mine and had to be sunk after
rescue of survivors.
Seven of ship’s company were killed.
26th Came under air attack by suicide
aircraft after completion of LIVERY.
HMS VESTAL was
seriously damaged and also had to be sunk.
20 of ship’s company
were lost.

N o t e s
HMS PLUCKY remained in the Far East with the
Flotilla for minesweeping operations to ensure safe passage of shipping into ports in the
area. She returned to UK with the remaining sister ships of the Flotilla in
July 1946. Paid off at Sheerness in
September she was reduced to Reserve status and laid-up. This ship
recommissioned for service in the 2nd Minesweeping Flotilla, Mediterranean Fleet after refit in 1947. Based in Malta
during her subsequent service was
deployed in the Mediterranean and on took part Fleet and Flotilla exercises as
well as Mediterranean Fleet annual
Exercises and Visits programmes. At the end of 1954 she returned to UK with her sister ships RIFLEMAN,
CHAMELEON and RECRUIT to Pay-Off. After arrival at Portsmouth on 13th December she reduced to
Reserve status and laid-up at Chatham. In 1956 this minesweeper was placed on
the Disposal List and sold to
BISCO for demolition by Clayton and Davie at Dunston where she arrived in tow
on 15th June that year.
