USS CLAXTON - Underway in 1943

        Desron 23 off Savo Island

        Desron 23 entering Ironbottom Sound
from around Savo Island in 1943.
        All destroyers when rounding Savo
would execute an S turn like this to
honor the dead from the many
        Naval battles here during the
        Gaudalcanal campaign.

The leading destroyer is the AUSBURNE followed by the
CLAXTON and DYSON. That usually was the order of
steaming when in column at that time.

      Action hashmarks on gun director

View of the main battery gun director showing action hash marks. The row of marks
on the left indicates Jap aircraft shot down. The middle row shows the number of
shore bombardments and the right hand row shows major surface engagements.
Shooting up Jap barges didn't rate a hash mark.   Thanks to our old shipmate
      Bob  Horvath for this photo.
