This post is dedicated to the USS Liberty (AGTR5) and her crew, of whom 35 were killed and 171 wounded, on June 8, 1967, when she was attacked by aircraft and torpedo boats of the Israeli armed forces during the Six Day War.

Rescue units dispatched to her aid from the sixth fleet were cancelled by President Johnson and Sec of Defense Robert MacNamara so as not to cause a clash with Israel, and she was left to fend for herself.

Eternal Father, Strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bid'st the mighty Ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to thee,
for those in peril on the sea.
-Navy Hymn

We need periodic reminders of this tragic and avoidable event, primarily to honor those forgotten, neglected and ignored by our leaders at the time. We also need reminding of the spineless stupidity of those that caused so many deaths, there in the Near East, and in Vietnam as well.

A couple of the crewman on the Liberty were from around our area. The Legion post in a nieghboring town has built and dedicated a monument and park called "Liberty Park." We will be holding our annual Flag Day ceremony there this Friday. Every summer the local chapter of the VVA holds a 24 hour POW/MIA vigil there. The USS Liberty and her crew will never be forgotten aroud here.
