Sgt. 1st Class Christopher James Speer, 28, of Albuquerque, N.M., was among five U.S. soldiers injured in an ambush on July 27 in the east of Afghanistan. He died Wednesday, a Department of Defense statement said. Speer was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Chris was my cousin, and on behalf of our family, I would like to thank you for your support. It is incredibly encouraging to know that other people cared about him.
