UK Units in Gulf War were allowed to wear and still are the shermagh a sort of arab scrarf. LRDG in WWWII started this for special forces (forerunners of SAS!) - and Lawrence of Arabia did the same in WW1. Glubb Pashah in the late 1940's continued the same tradition for the arab legion now Joranian army.
Why did the US not use such a practical headgear?

Practical? How is it 'practical'?

Hi Mike. I do not remember seeing any UK units wearing such headgear. But then if they were SF I would not have seen them. I think our headgear was very practical. Wide brims, desert colors, and light breathable materials made for a very comfortable desert boonie hat. Of course more often then not you would have found me wearing a hat even more practical in a combat zone, a Kevlar helmet ;)
