NSWC Indian Head Recognized for
Thermobaric Weapon Development

INDIAN HEAD, Md. (NNS) -- Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Indian Head was recently awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation (MUC) for the center's development and production of the thermobaric weapon.
Vice Adm. Phillip Balisle, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command presented the award to the center during a ceremony on Sept. 17.
The MUC is awarded by the Secretary of the Navy to Navy and Marine Corps units distinguishing themselves through valorous or meritorious achievement. It is considered the unit equivalent of the Bronze Star Medal awarded to an individual.
NSWC Indian Head explosives engineers developed the thermobaric weapons, which were used earlier this year against al Qaeda and Taliban forces in Afghanistan.
"The NSWC Indian Head family is clearly worthy of this tremendous honor," said Capt. Marc Siedband, NSWC Indian Head commanding officer. "It has consistently delivered the required products and services to America's war-fighters safely,
responsively and with unsurpassed quality."
