Deserter arrested at wedding

Associated Press

SLIDELL, La. ? A Marine was charged with carnal knowledge of a juvenile after meeting up with his 16-year-old girlfriend instead of reporting for infantry training, police and military officials said.
A warrant was issued for Boyd ?Bubba? Earl, 20, of Slidell, after he failed to appear at Camp Lejeune, N.C., on Jan. 2. He was awaiting arraignment in the Slidell jail on Friday, said Lt. Rob Callahan, spokesman for the Slidell Police Department.

A Marine spokeswoman said Earl also will be charged with unauthorized absence from his base.

Earl, his girlfriend and his brother fought with police when officers arrested the Marine after a family wedding on Monday, Callahan said. Police had received a tip that Earl and his girlfriend would be in the wedding, and the fight broke out in the church foyer after the ceremony, Callahan said.

?Out of respect for the bride and groom, (officers) waited until after the wedding party had finished taking the pictures to make the arrest. But it still turned into a ruckus,? Callahan said.

Earl was also charged with simple battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, for allegedly having sex with his juvenile girlfriend, police said.

Earl?s girlfriend, a runaway whose name was not released, was booked with simple battery on a police officer and resisting arrest. Earl?s brother, Clayton James Earl, 26, of Bay St. Louis, Miss., was booked with resisting arrest and disturbing the peace.

No one was injured, Callahan said.

Boyd Earl had completed boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., and was assigned to Delta Company Infantry Training Battalion at Camp Lejeune, said 2nd Lt. Kate Vandenbossche, a Marine Corps spokeswoman. He could face a court-martial, administrative punishment or dismissal from the Marines Corps, she said.

Earl?s rank was unavailable, but Vandenbossche said he is either a private or private first class.

P.S. I've never had the police show up at any of the hundreds of weddings I performed. I must be missing out on something. :D
