Emergency Fire Shelter at Qualcomm Stadium

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Local servicemembers are volunteering
their time to assist those who had to leave their homes during
Fire Storm 2003. Many evacuees came to the emergency shelter
set up in Qualcomm Stadium's parking lot.
Several Sailors and Marines volunteered to help in any way they
could. "I think I may have seen a few Marines out here, just
getting out there and helping people. Just reaching out and doing
exactly what we believe God wanted us to do," said volunteer
and evacuee Lt. Robert Mercado, a Navy Chaplain attached to
Naval Station San Diego.
Service members helped sort piles of donated clothes for the
families and provided manpower to move supplies and to settle
security concerns.
"We're folding and separating the clothes into two different
(categories), like little children, babies, women's, girl's, men and
boy's," said Naval Station Security Master-at-Arms Seaman
Tabitha Powers, as she stacked folded clothes onto a table.
Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handler) 2nd Class Terrence
Brown stationed aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6),
who evacuated military housing with his family, says he's grateful
for all the community support. "It's amazing how many people
pull together during time of need, I mean people came out with
supplies, donating everything. It's helping us out a lot."
While 3,200 Navy homes have been evacuated, with 2,200
servicemembers and their families housed at local shelters,
Commander, Navy Region Southwest Rear Adm. Jose
Betancourt had some encouraging news. "We have not had a
single report of any Navy family being injured. We have not had
any reports of any of our houses being burned."
