Subj: The Phantom is Coming to Midway
Date: 2/25/04 12:01:22 AM Eastern Standard Time
From: sdacm@aol.com
www.midway.org
Is Midway haunted? No, it's just our newly restored F-4S Phantom! One of the most versatile aircraft in the history of the Navy, the Phantom will be the fourth restored aircraft on board Midway and will join the flight deck ballet at the trap.
Volunteers have begun restoration of the ship's mess decks and island superstructure. If you are available to volunteer, please contact Lynda Newton at midwayvols@san.rr.com for more information.
Our Board of Directors is planning a limited number of opening celebrations on board Midway. If you have not already joined our Circle of Friends and are interested in being a part of grand-opening events, please visit our Circle of Friends web site at www.midway.org/help/help.htm for additional information on the benefits of joining our Circle of Friends (including invitations to an opening celebration). Your donation will go towards the restoration of the vessel. Membership programs will be available on our web site later this spring.
We appreciate the time and effort each of our board members and volunteers have devoted to developing what will become the American flagship of floating naval aviation museums. We look forward to welcoming the public aboard Midway in June 2004.
Sincerely,
Riley D. Mixson

piece of it all from the Museum store called The Jet Shop. Light
refreshments will be available in the Fantail Cafe.

Three flight helmets (HGU-33 type preferred)
Three oxygen masks
Three Nomex flight suits
Three flight suit harnesses

Kudos to Our Volunteers
A project like this does not enjoy the level of success we have reached without the dedication of a great group of volunteers. We have hundreds of individuals who have offered their time and talents to this project.
For those of you who have made the trek down to Harbor Drive to view the Midway, you have come into contact with many of these great volunteers. Each day a dozen or so volunteers greet pedestrians along the waterfront
as visitors stroll the Embarcadero between Seaport Village and the Star of India. During their sojourn visitors inquiry about the size of the ship and details on her crew. These volunteers are helping us build our initial base of members and educate folks from across the country on the grandeur of this modern marvel, the aircraft carrier.

Welcome to Ship to Shore, a periodic update on the USS Midway, the Navy?s longest-serving carrier now ?deployed? as an immensely popular naval aviation museum in San Diego!
TBM Avenger Arrives on Midway
The Midway Museum is working toward expanding its ?air wing? to include WWII-vintage aircraft. On November 10, a TBM-3 Avenger torpedo bomber was gently lifted onto Midway and towed to a prominent position on the hangar deck. The TBM with its signature revolving rear gun turret first saw combat in the Battle of Midway in 1942. Midway has other WWII-era aircraft in the restoration pipeline as well. We anticipate a Douglas SBD Dauntless will arrive in 2007. We?ll keep you posted as the date becomes finalized.
Midway Memories Almost a Sellout
The first edition of the unique book of photos taken by USS Midway sailors?Midway Memories?is almost sold out only seven months after its debut! We?ve ordered a second edition and have held enough first-edition copies in reserve as the perfect Holiday Season gift. So now?s the time to order one or more so autographed copies can arrive in plenty of time as a ?lifetime memory? like no other. Visit www.midwaymagic.com to place your gift order.
USS Midway on Network TV
The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition television program on ABC is scheduled to broadcast an episode on Sunday, November 19, that was partially filmed aboard the Midway in San Diego! A deserving family visited San Diego while their Wisconsin home was being renovated and their trip to Midway was recorded. They even watched video clips of their home repairs from the flight deck of Midway. The Midway portion is sure to be brief, but it will reach more than 15 million homes across the country. Check your local listings for an episode description that might include ?Koepke family? or ?Wisconsin.?
In Town for New Year?s Eve?
Imagine celebrating the New Year aboard the Midway! For the third consecutive year, a catering partner of Midway?Peartrees Catering?is organizing a New Year?s Eve dinner party with proceeds benefiting the museum. It will feature an evening of spectacular views, champagne, sumptuous dinner, and dancing to the Big Daddy Orchestra. The cost is $139/person, inclusive. Black tie is optional. Evolution of the Ship, Part 1: Northern Europe and Scandinavia
Based on the success of our prior Maritime Museum travels abroad ? our voyage to Europe on Queen Mary II (2004) and the Star of India and Medea Heritage Tour to Scotland and the Isle of Man (2005), we have worked with STS International Tours to create the most exceptional maritime history tour we believe that has ever been offered.
In keeping with a theme of tracing the lineage of the historic ships of our own museum and those preserved elsewhere in other maritime museums, we have designed an archaeologist?s expeditionary tour to trace the origins and development of the ship itself. Assuming that the Star of India and ships like her represent the final development of the oceanic sailing ship, perhaps the most formative single technological development of the last 1000 years, this tour establishes as its object a quest to determine how the Northern European lineage of the ship developed and in keeping with that, the history of the modern world written in the very planks, frames, rigging, and implements that have been discovered, excavated, and now exhibited in some of the world?s most fascinating and beautiful cities.
From the ancient Hjortspring Boat exhibited in Copenhagen to the Brunel masterpiece Great Britain preserved in her construction dry-dock in Bristol, we will travel through the early dark ages, the Viking era, the days of the great oceanic empires, and the maritime industrial revolution. We will walk the decks of ships-of-the-line, actually sail in a Hansa Cog, and view the implements and personal artifacts of Viking kings, Tudor seamen, and polar explorers. As a member of this expedition you will have the opportunity to ?collect? in impressions and photography no fewer than sixteen ships in six countries spanning more than 2000 years of maritime history. As a group these ships represent some of the most spectacular archaeological finds of history, preserved in some of the world?s greatest museums in the most intriguing cities of Europe. This adventure will be enriched with lectures and commentary by the historians and curators who care for and interpret these treasures as well as ongoing travel commentary by our own experienced STS Program Director.
By traveling as a museum delegation during this expedition, we achieve a remarkable savings on price, enjoy the hospitality of the curators and historians who will be our guides, share in the camaraderie of the search and the excitement of new discoveries, and benefit from the expertise of an organization that specializes in unique museum tours. The maritime world has been preparing this itinerary for 2000 years. Won?t you come with us?
We look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you and your friends on this great customized adventure The Evolution of the Ship, Part 1: Northern Europe and Scandinavia.
Sincerely,
Raymond E. Ashley, PhD.

Join the corps of dedicated men and women telling the story of Naval Aviation aboard the most popular ship museum in America, The USS Midway. Midway is currently recruiting new safety team volunteers.
Join our volunteers who proudly wear the red hats & shirts, whom you will see roaming the decks of our floating museum. By belonging to this esteemed group you will apply your skills to protecting our visitors, our property & maintaining crowd control. Visitor safety & security is a high priority aboard the Midway.
These ?red hats? assist our visitors with information & directions. Safety/Security volunteers regularly patrol all areas of the ship. They monitor all entrances & exits as well as loading & parking areas adjacent to the ship. Special events & operations require participation by Safety/Security volunteers, as well. Administrative activity involves parking permit control, incident reporting, safety equipment management, personnel training & records maintenance.
Volunteers for this activity need to be physically fit, able to climb the many ladders (stairs) aboard ship and stand for extended periods of time, so it?s not the job for sedentary folk!

For the first time guests will be able to explore the admiral?s quarters, conference room, war room and TFCC. The captain?s in-port cabin and ship?s communications will be opened all on the 02 level as well as the brig down on the third deck. Be sure to take a look at some amazing ?slice of life? photos taken of sailors aboard Midway. Both the San Diego Padres and the Midway share a deep commitment to saluting and supporting those in the military, making this a perfect partnership!
