This Isn't America

By PAUL KRUGMAN

Last week an opinion piece in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz about the killing of Sheik Ahmed Yassin said, "This isn't America; the government did not invent intelligence material nor exaggerate the description of the threat to justify their attack."

So even in Israel, George Bush's America has become a byword for deception and abuse of power. And the administration's reaction to Richard Clarke's "Against All Enemies" provides more evidence of something rotten in the state of our government.

The truth is that among experts, what Mr. Clarke says about Mr. Bush's terrorism policy isn't controversial. The facts that terrorism was placed on the back burner before 9/11 and that Mr. Bush blamed Iraq despite the lack of evidence are confirmed by many sources ? including "Bush at War," by Bob Woodward.

And new evidence keeps emerging for Mr. Clarke's main charge, that the Iraq obsession undermined the pursuit of Al Qaeda. From yesterday's USA Today: "In 2002, troops from the Fifth Special Forces Group who specialize in the Middle East were pulled out of the hunt for Osama bin Laden to prepare for their next assignment: Iraq. Their replacements were troops with expertise in Spanish cultures."

That's why the administration responded to Mr. Clarke the way it responds to anyone who reveals inconvenient facts: with a campaign of character assassination .

Some journalists seem, finally, to have caught on. Last week an Associated Press news analysis noted that such personal attacks were "standard operating procedure" for this administration and cited "a behind-the-scenes campaign to discredit Richard Foster," the Medicare actuary who revealed how the administration had deceived Congress about the cost of its prescription drug bill.

But other journalists apparently remain ready to be used. On CNN, Wolf Blitzer told his viewers that unnamed officials were saying that Mr. Clarke "wants to make a few bucks, and that [in] his own personal life, they're also suggesting that there are some weird aspects in his life as well."

This administration's reliance on smear tactics is unprecedented in modern U.S. politics ? even compared with Nixon's. Even more disturbing is its readiness to abuse power ? to use its control of the government to intimidate potential critics.

To be fair, Senator Bill Frist's suggestion that Mr. Clarke might be charged with perjury may have been his own idea. But his move reminded everyone of the White House's reaction to revelations by the former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill: an immediate investigation into whether he had revealed classified information. The alacrity with which this investigation was opened was, of course, in sharp contrast with the administration's evident lack of interest in finding out who leaked the identity of the C.I.A. operative Valerie Plame to Bob Novak.

And there are many other cases of apparent abuse of power by the administration and its Congressional allies. A few examples: according to The Hill, Republican lawmakers threatened to cut off funds for the General Accounting Office unless it dropped its lawsuit against Dick Cheney. The Washington Post says Representative Michael Oxley told lobbyists that "a Congressional probe might ease if it replaced its Democratic lobbyist with a Republican." Tom DeLay used the Homeland Security Department to track down Democrats trying to prevent redistricting in Texas. And Medicare is spending millions of dollars on misleading ads for the new drug benefit ? ads that look like news reports and also serve as commercials for the Bush campaign.

On the terrorism front, here's one story that deserves special mention. One of the few successful post-9/11 terror prosecutions ? a case in Detroit ? seems to be unraveling. The government withheld information from the defense, and witnesses unfavorable to the prosecution were deported (by accident, the government says). After the former lead prosecutor complained about the Justice Department's handling of the case, he suddenly found himself facing an internal investigation ? and someone leaked the fact that he was under investigation to the press.

Where will it end? In his new book, "Worse Than Watergate," John Dean, of Watergate fame, says, "I've been watching all the elements fall into place for two possible political catastrophes, one that will take the air out of the Bush-Cheney balloon and the other, far more disquieting, that will take the air out of democracy."

We can only hope and pray that the FORMER is what takes place and NOT the "LATTER"!

These guys have GOT to be STOPPED!

Great new thread title. Too bad that the article itself that The Title Title leads-off,...pretty-much proves: "This Isn't America", especially for those fanatically bent and prefering their clique: "Recapture The White House",...as Kerry would say.
To such power and control types ABOVE ALL ELSE,...I would say: "Capture this,...I'm an American and need no lords and masters".

Regardless Gimpy, even you must realize that politicians blaming each other for The Sneak Attack called: "9/11",...is just as enemy encouraging as if similarly (quite stupidly also) such IN DETAIL PUBLIC DISCLOSURES (simultaneously broadcast to the enemy also) OF AMERICA's FAILURES & WEAKNESSES were done after December 7, 1941 (re. "Pearl Harbor") and/or after our FIRST Sneak Attack by the similarly fanatical and murderous Imperial Japanese?

In fairness, way-back-when such enemy helpfulness and enemy gratification and satisfaction being blabbered on a daily basis,...would've demanded at least hangings or firing squads.

Sure, Dems/Libs might get a few extra votes from such perpetual and deceptive nonsense, or as some oppositely believe help Dems/Libs finally self-destruct? But, and as an American first and foremost,...who-the-hell-cares what happens to any fanatical and Country Dividing cliques!!! This is wartime.

Besides Gimpy,...only terrorists kill Americans anyway. The only fairly current and large body count attributable to an American politician was during a 20 or so year period. Believe the string of purposeful political orchestrated killings, strange suicides and disappearances stretched from Little Rock, Arkansas to Washington, D.C.

Now that's something that actually IS politically believable,...no matter how many cockamamie ways Clinton The Master Politician and Master Linguist defined the word: "IS".

I?d agree that Israel is not America as they are in grave peril each and every day. The Musad has been in business for a very long time and have an established reputation of taking out the perps regardless of politicos musing, rambling, fretting and Chicken Little act. We aren?t so lucky here as we are known to strip and gut out our intel outfits on a whim or some contrived PC nicety.

Then we end up getting in the sorry, tragic mess we ended up with on 9/11. In my opinion, no great or ugly thing is created suddenly and although Bush stands accused of every evil deed up to and including the black plague and original sin, I?d say there is enough incompetent politico clap trap inside the Beltway to fully tar and feather many politicos and administrations over many decades of intel agency management stupidity/funding issues. By the way, wasn?t it his Lordship Kerry?s proposal that we completely do away with the CIA? Maybe my memory is inaccurate on that particular issue, but I distinctly recall that a scrub the CIA issue was proposed and his Nibs was all for the concept.

As to Mr. Clarke, well, I?m all for declassifying some meeting minutes or memos, recordings, etc., that directly deal with his allegations. Let?s have a look-see and let the reality chips fall where they may. It just could be that Mr. Clarke will be among the many, many ?experts? who end up being hung with their own tongues. Or it could be that he is spot-on and will be vindicated, who knows. But he?s put another salvo of serious stuff on the national plate so let the truth out and let?s roll-on from that point. Of course the Repo position that there be some declassifying of vindicating information going on will be rebuffed and condemned by the Left, as usual. Uga, no potential Pres. wants that particular sleeping dog awakened cause that ol?e axe can swing both ways, cut real deep and lob off some heads.

Well stated. Still, and for the life of me, I'll just never understand why even the most political of career political animals would want to: "Recapture" control of anything or even need to sell a book so bad,...and especially when knowing that if people believe such lies and start going along with such and clique's quite foreign to America (more so socialistic and foreigner appeasing nonsense),...it's more than likely that they and clique will only have rubble and ruin to: "Recapture". Books will probably have to be written on slate, also?

Hope I'm wrong, and also hope that Kerry and crowd doesn't even get a chance to prove me right. Hey,...we're all in the same boat (UNFORTUNATELY SO-DAMN-OPEN every which way possible).

I suppose that the ?recapture? concept is just so much political theater and drama for the moment. Plus I reckon that Kerry is a Kennedy creation in totality so he doesn?t say much that hasn?t been thoroughly Teddyized, sanitized, washed and pressed well before hand. So all in all, I just look to the Teddy Kennedy stuff of the past to get the spin Kerry in putting on the ball currently. And yes, this political season has all the earmarks of being the nastiest is US History and I fully expect some things never seen before in the US and I expect these will emanate from the way-way Left strange bed fellows Kerry is all snuggled up to. It?s a bit too scary to contemplate right now so I?ll just watch and see what goes on with various political platforms and thoughts as they develop. The ?power at any price? posture taken by Kerry and Co. bears watching to see exactly what that means and exactly whose ox will be on the chopping block as part of the process if and when it goes to that extreeme.

of the gentlemen who have replied to this thread have "missed the point" or have somehow misinterpreted the "message" of the author.

It is NOT about whether the 9/11 disaster is to be "blamed" on someone in our Government...PAST or PRESENT!

It IS about "George Bush's America has become a byword for deception and abuse of power. And his administration's reaction to Richard Clarke's "Against All Enemies" provides more evidence of something rotten in the state of our government."!

It IS about how "the administration responded to Mr. Clarke the way it responds to anyone who reveals inconvenient facts: with a campaign of character assassination ."

It IS about how "Last week an Associated Press news analysis noted that such personal attacks were "standard operating procedure" for this administration and cited "a behind-the-scenes campaign to discredit Richard Foster," the Medicare actuary who revealed how the administration had deceived Congress about the cost of its prescription drug bill."

It IS about how "This administration's reliance on smear tactics is unprecedented in modern U.S. politics ? even compared with Nixon's. Even more disturbing is its readiness to abuse power ? to use its control of the government to intimidate potential critics."

It is ALL ABOUT how "abuse of power by this administration and its Congressional allies" are undermining and destroying the very thing G.W. Bush said he was going to do if elected in 2000, BRING DIGNITY & HONOR back to the Whitehouse!!

Well, if THIS is his version of 'DIGNITY & HONOR' ...I can damn well do without it!

Well maybe not a misinterpretation Mr. Gimpy. What was presented was an editorial opinion and that?s OK, no big deal. Where I see red is when editorial opinion is all mish mashed up and presented as gospel truth and certainly AP and others do that often enough. But in this instance it was all up-front as an editorial opinion so I?m OK with interpreting an individual opinion (or in the case of AP, the editor?s opinion, regardless of by line).

Anyway, here is my personal reality check and I didn?t get beyond the opening spin statement. In reality Israel can be harsh with US policy when we try to get into their way of things; as we often do, but I find it very hard to believe that any official Israeli statement would be harsh of US policy regarding Iraq. My take is that the Israelis are doing hand springs and back flips of joy having Iraq removed as an emanate threat to their national survival. They remember the thirty-six scuds sent their way by Iraq, each one capable of carrying some kind of WMD warhead and they well remember taking out the French built Iraqi nuke facility.

So I?d say that Mr. Krugman/AP is being more than a bit creative with the opening of this particular editorial opinion and I really wonder who in the world would take that spin to the bank.
As to Mr. Clarke and his book/recollections/assertions, he certainly isn?t the first to get across the third rail of an Administration and get a counter jolt of some high KVs, nor will he be the last. He has put his professional credibility on the line so let?s have a look-see at some authentic exculpatory evidence, if there is any, and let the thunder and lightning happen as it will. I?m up for that, let?s roll and deal with reality I say.

Like I said. If your inability to get past "where you see red", and your " personal reality check didn?t get beyond the opening spin statement."

Then once again, I feel you have "missed" the point or intent of the authors message!
