The following letter of request was published in the online newspaper, www.veteransjournal.net
An Open Request to Senator John F. Kerry
Senator Kerry, you have asked the 26 million U.S. veterans to support your bid for the Presidency of the United States in the upcoming election.
You have voiced strongly your desire to become the Commander-in-Chief, referring either directly or indirectly to your military experience as a qualification of your leadership skills for the most powerful job in the world.
You have argued that because you have served on active duty in a combat role, that you have a distinct advantage should you be called upon to make the decision of putting members of our Armed Forces into harm's way.
During your months of campaigning for the Presidency, you have continuously stood upon your military record while in the presence of scores of veterans.
Like most veterans, you are no doubt proud of your service; as we are proud of ours.
The Veterans Journal suggests that you step down off of those records upon which you stand, and open them up for veterans to see for themselves.
As President Bush has already submitted his military records for review, we respectfully request that you provide complete disclosure of your U.S. Navy Service Records, allowing ample time for public review before October 1, 2004.
The Veterans Journal believes that because you are asking support from that very special category of Americans who have proven their devotion to this Nation by thier selfless sacrifices during their service in the Armed Forces, and insofar as you base that request for support upon your military record, then the honorable action you undertake would be to show those same veterans the records upon which you stand.
