MELROSE PARK, Ill. -- Firefighters gathered overnight to lay a wreath at the site where two fire trucks struck each other, killing a 34-year-old firefighter, as they headed to a garage fire in Franklin Park.

? Images: Firefighters Gather; Accident Scene
? Video: Firefighter Killed

Two other firefighters were injured, one of them critically, when the trucks collided Tuesday evening. A witness said the crash sounded like a bomb went off.

The firefighter died at Loyola University Medical Center in the Chicago suburb of Maywood, said hospital spokeswoman Sandra Martinez.

The collision happened about 6 p.m. at an intersection on the border of the suburbs of Northlake and Melrose Park. Trucks from Northlake and the suburb of Stone Park were involved, according to witnesses.

Cecil Graham, 39, a mechanic with Pollard Motor Co. in Melrose Park, said he was walking outside when he saw one firetruck heading through the intersection of Mannheim Road and Armitage Avenue. The other firetruck was traveling along Mannheim.

"As soon as (the truck) crossed the first lane of traffic, that's when I heard the bomb -- the big explosion," he said.

Graham said one firetruck landed on its side after the collision.

"I could see underneath the truck, the whole thing," he said.

Investigators believe the Northlake was turning north on Mannheim from the eastbound lanes of Armitage when it struck the Stone Park's only firetruck, which was traveling north on Mannheim.

"Clearly, this is a tragic event for both communities," said Stone Park Village Attorney Dean Krone. "I'm sure that all members of the departments and of other departments feel very deeply about this situation."

Firefighters involved in the accident had to extricate at least one firefighter from the truck and had to extinguish flames coming from it.

Ellen Maslo, a receptionist at Pollard, said the trucks were "pretty mangled" when she stepped outside.

"I thought if anybody came out of there, it would be a miracle," she said.

NBC5's Rob Elgas reported that investigators said both the Northlake truck and the Stone Park truck were responding to the same call -- a garage fire in nearby Lyons Township.

"I don't know whether there was communication between the two departments tonight," Krone said.

The 34-year-old Stone Park firefighter who died in the accident was also a Chicago firefighter assigned to Engine No. 57 at Division and Western, where he was an EMT, NBC5's Amy Jacobson reported.

The driver of the Stone Park fire truck was in critical condition at Loyola Tuesday night and was undergoing surgery for two broken femurs, a collapsed lung and head injuries.

"Considering that we work with these people all the time, it kind of hits home," said 32-year fire veteran Capt. Carl Lite. "There's small fender benders with ambulances and passenger cars, but with two firetrucks like this, no."

A 27-year-old Stone Park firefighter was at Elmhurst Hospital in serious condition Tuesday night, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

Two other firefighters were treated for minor injuries and released Tuesday night.

RAPIDS CITY -- Friends and family mourn the death of a local soldier who died in the war with Iraq.

Sgt. Landis Garrison 23, of Rapids City, died yesterday in combat. He served with the 333rd Military Police unit out of Freeport.

The Illinois Army National Guard tonight isn't saying how Sgt. Garrison was killed. His family in Rapids City got the news of his death late Thursday night with a knock at their door. Then the fire department was paged.

Inside, a lot of hugs and tears. Outside, flags fly at half staff outside the Port Byron Fire Station in tribute to Sgt. Landis Garrison.

?He just, he had a heart of gold,? said firefighter Tony DeCap.

For his friends and fellow firefighters on the small department, the fact he won't be coming back, still sinking in.

?Great guy, he'd do anything for you, had a big heart,? he added, nodding.

Garrison was only 23, but started on the fire department here when he was just 17.

In Iraq, as a military police officer now for a year, Garrison?s friends at the fire station kept in touch, publicly showing their support and pride for their soldier.

?He wanted to serve his country like everything else he did, he did it 110 percent.?

Garrison was supposed to be home now. His unit actually he got to the airport and was sent back north.?

His friends here just got an email from Landis on Sunday, who told them he was headed back into Iraq Monday, thanking them for their support and assuring them a welcome home party was in the works.

?Greatest, fun-loving guy I ever had to meet,? said firefighter Steve Sallows. ?I'll never forget him.?

Garrison was also a part-time police officer for Hampton.

Funeral arrangements are still pending, but we're told it may be held in Riverdale High School to accommodate all the people.

We had a large fire in a downtown building. I took my crew in to lay down water at the base of the fire. We had gone about ten feet into the building when the roof collapsed. Those big timbers just missed me by six inches or less. We backed out of there post haste. I told the chief "no one is going in there until the fire and building has been stabilized.

Your stories bring back memories.

Thanks Keith, not trying to bring back bad memories, just trying to let people know what we do everyday. To me, it seems as though people do not realize what firefighters and first responders do everyday. The dangers they face and people they help. Our profession is almost as thankless as that of the soldier but no less dangerous.

I copy these stories from another web site I belong to, firehouse.com, check it out sometime, lots of good stuff there!

<DIV>Amarillo Firefighters Mourn Death of Comrade

PHILLIP YATES

Amarillo firefighters striped their badges with black mourning ribbons, and flags at city fire stations flew at half-staff in tribute to a fallen comrade who died Monday after suffering critical injuries in the line of duty Saturday.

With wreaths of flowers hanging underneath the low-flying American flag at the Amarillo Fire Department's Central Fire Station, firefighters remained in a state of shock and grief after learning the news that firefighter Christopher Brian Hunton, 27, died Monday morning at Northwest Texas Hospital, said Amarillo Fire Chief Steve Ross.

"They are just devastated," Ross said. "He (Hunton) has his own family, but he was also a part of our family."

Hunton, who was an AFD firefighter since March 6, 2003, died at Northwest Texas Hospital at 9:53 a.m. after suffering serious injuries when he fell from a firetruck Saturday night, Ross said.

Hunton had surgery soon after the accident and was placed in the intensive care unit at the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries early Monday, Ross said.

According to an Amarillo Police Department report of the accident, a defective door handle may have been a contributing factor in Hunton's fall from the firetruck.

The department's fire marshal, Terry McKinney, said officials are waiting on the arrival of the Texas State Fire Marshal's Office, which will begin its own investigation into the accident.

"I am just convinced that once the investigation is completed, we will have a very clear picture," McKinney said. "Right now, all we have are assumptions."

McKinney said the department is also expecting an autopsy.

Hunton is the first Amarillo firefighter to die in the line of duty since Kenneth Albert Caldwell, 29, died Aug. 16, 1982, while searching for residents inside a burning Amarillo apartment building. Two other Amarillo firefighters have died in the line of duty since 1936.

The accident occurred about 10 p.m. when Ladder Truck No. 3 was responding to a fire in the 2600 block of South Polk Street. The firetruck, a 1998 Freightliner, left the Central Fire Station at Fourth Avenue and Van Buren Street and went north before turning right on Southwest Third Avenue.

While the truck was turning, Hunton, who was in the left-rear passenger side of the truck, fell out after the passenger side door came open, according to an Amarillo Police Department accident report.

The truck was traveling at a relatively slow speed at the time of the accident, according to police reports.

The fire department has set up a fund in Hunton's name at Amarillo National Bank, and fire officials are in contact with Hunton's family to plan his funeral service, Ross said.

Hunton, who was not married and had no children, will be buried in Lubbock, where his parents live, but a funeral date had not been set late Monday, said AFD Capt. Bob Johnson.

Ross said members of the department will continue to wear the mourning badges and keep their flags at half-staff for the next 30 days to honor Hunton.

"It is out of respect for a fallen brother," Ross said.</DIV>

Question...

Is there anyone place/agency whatever whose job it is to collect and make available history of ALL such losses in America, or is it done just locally, or what?

When I got hired by the City of Oakland (Calif.) it was necessary to go to the OPD to get fingerprinted... just when you walk in the main entrance they have a huge marble wall with large bronze stars on it for each peace officer LODD... quite impressive.

I was just wondering if there is some sort of national museum or archives on this, of some kind.

Cat -

Here are a few leads... in that direction, just came across them.

Former NYC cop pushes for police museum

"HILTON HEAD ISLAND: He also wants to establish a Hall of Fame dedicated to officers who died at World Trade Center and elsewhere.

By Stephanie Broadbent
Carolina Morning News

A former New York City police officer who retired to Hilton Head Island is gathering support for creating the first national police museum and hall of fame for law enforcement officers.

He doesn't want it located in Washington, D.C., or even New York City. He hopes to have it built on Hilton Head.

Roger Valente, who founded Our Nation's Police Heroes Foundation earlier this year, has talked for years of wanting to do something for police officers and their families to honor their work and show his appreciation.

"My wife got tired of me yelling at the television every time the police were knocked for doing something wrong and never given credit for doing something right," Valente said. "I'd get furious. So she says, 'Get up off your fat butt and do something.' "

And he did. In January, he created the police heroes foundation and since then the group has honored two Georgia police officers and one from Beaufort.

After the events of Sept. 11, they decided to "think bigger," Valente said.

Valente still carries the New York City badge he earned the week of his 21st birthday. Now, it's cloaked in a black band, in memory of more than 30 New York police officers who died in the rubble of the World Trade Center. He doubts he'll ever take the black band off.

He wants to build a hall of fame to memorialize those police officers first, and then add to it each year the names of officers who deserve to be honored.

He also hopes to gather memorabilia from around the country to illustrate the early days of police work and its progress since. Both would be housed in one building.

It will be no easy task. Valente and his supporters are starting from scratch, with no money.

What they do have is vocal support and encouragement from a number of local and state leaders.

Valente addressed the Hilton Head Town Council last week about his ideas and Hilton Head Mayor Tom Peeples wrote him a letter of support. He wasn't asking for money.

Valente said he also has support of a number of state lawmakers in Columbia and Washington. He believes the S.C. House of Representatives will pass a resolution in January directing his organization to move forward on his plans to open a museum and hall of fame on Hilton Head.

After that, he hopes to get financial backing, possibly from the federal government. He wants to buy an old movie theater on Main Street for $1.4 million to remodel into the museum and hall of fame.

He estimates the entire project would cost about $3 million. He wants to model it after the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Pa.

That's not a high price to pay for a place that would likely attract more tourists and give police the attention they deserve, he said.

"This could be a real boom for the town," he said.

Valente doesn't think his dream is a long shot. There is a national firefighters museum in Baltimore, but no national museum for law enforcement officers. Hilton Head would be a good place because it already attracts tourists and would be a good place for those who want to visit the museum to vacation, he said.

"The project is very viable," he said. "We think we have to raise public awareness first and when we raise public awareness, the money will follow."

Valente said he would also like to host national or even international seminars for police agencies at the museum and provide public education about law enforcement."

The only "national" Firefighters museum I could locate for sure...

"Oklahoma Firefighters Museum
Children find it fun, interesting and exciting. Adults say they've never seen anything like it. Attractions outside allow unlimited imaginations but once the museum doors swing wide, their attention is directed to the remarkable collection of antique fire apparatus, tools and machinery used since 1736.

The Firefighters Museum houses the large, colorful Ben Dancy shoulder patch collection, over 4,500. Exhibits offer a spectrum of educational and historic memorabilia. Some permanent, some on loan from Ben Franklin's company, they range from a 1736 massive section of hand-carved wooden water main to a rotating exhibit of the largest privately-owned fire alarm box collection.

Real firefighting afficianados will recognize the many classic fire engines housed at the museum. The Ahrens-Fox Front-Mount Piston Pumper. The 1917 REO Hose and Chemical Truck. The 1870 Hunneman Hand Pumper. The Amoskeag 1861 Steamer, capable of pumping 600 gallons per minute. And the beautiful 1910 American LaFrance Type 5 chemical and hose truck.

The Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum is located at 2716 NE 50th in Oklahoma City, easily accessible from I-35. It is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, except holidays. Admission is $3 for adults, $1.50 for children, and preschoolers are free with parents. Tour groups at half price. Call 405-424-3440 for more information.

UPPERTOWN FIREFIGHTERS MUSEUM

"The Uppertown Firefighters Museum houses an extensive collection of fire fighting equipment and memorabilia dating as far back as the 1880's. There are hand-pulled, horse-drawn and motorized fire engines and vivid photographic displays of some of Astoria's most spectacular fires.

The historic 1896 building originally was part of the popular North Pacific Brewery which was closed by Prohibition in 1915. In 1928 the City of Astoria rebuilt the building as the Uppertown Fire Station #2. In 1960 it was retired and in 1989 the City of Astoria gave the building to the Clatsop County Historical Society for use as a museum. Much of the historic equipment on exhibit was also donated by the City."

Founded in 1976 for the purpose of preserving the history of the
Toledo Fire Division and educating citizens about fire prevention
and safety. In memory of fallen firefighters, the two-story museum
is located in a working fire station, "Old Number 18 Fire House",

circa 1920, which was replaced by a new station in 1975.

of vintage fire fighting equipment. The centerpiece of the museum
is the 1837 "Neptune", Toledo's first fire pumper. Lovingly restored
by Toledo Firefighters, the hand-pulled, hand-operated Neptune
required a 20-man crew and could deliver about 300 gallons
of water per minute.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toledo Steamers
by Tim Boaden, Historian - reprinted from The Hook and Letter, fall 2002

The first steam fire engine or "steamer" as they were commonly known, made its appearance in Toledo even before there was a paid fire department. Two of the early volunteer companies purchased steamers from the H.C. Silsby Island Works Company of Seneca, New York in 1861, six years before Toledo started paying its firemen.

Although the technology had been around for several decades, the first practical working steamer was used in Cincinnati in 1852. Its arrival signaled the end of large volunteer departments in most big cities, which by this time had become a political embarrassment because of fighting more with each other than fighting fires.

Since it only required two men to operate a steamer with an additional four to six hosemen as opposed to the 20 to 40 men it took to operate each hand engine, it is easy to see why city governments quickly adopted the steamer.

Between the first steamer purchased in 1861 and the last one in 1908, the Toledo Fire Department had a total of 23 from such manufacturers as the aforementioned Silsby, along with Amoskeag, Clapp and Jones, Ahrens and LaFrance.

When the department ultimately decided to convert to motorized fire engines, many of the steamers were relatively new so tractors replaced the horses.

The last steamer went out of service at Number 5 station on March 1, 1930, thus ending an era that spanned nearly 60 years. Although the last of the Toledo steamers went with the scrap metal drives of early World War II, the Toledo Firefighters Museum is actively seeking to buy or acquire one on loan.

I think this one is National...

"The United States Congress created the
National Fallen Firefighters Foundation

to lead a nationwide effort to remember America?s fallen firefighters. Since 1992, the tax-exempt, nonprofit Foundation has developed and expanded programs to honor our fallen fire heroes and assist their families and coworkers.
The Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, located in Emmitsburg, Maryland. It is registered as a corporation in the State of Maryland. The Foundation receives funding through private donations from caring individuals, organizations, corporations, and foundations.

A grant from the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance supports programs for survivors of fallen firefighters. The Federal Emergency Management Agency partners with the Foundation to sponsor many of the National Memorial Weekend activities. The National Institute of Standards and Technology supports work on a national research agenda to prevent line-of-duty deaths."
