I have asked this on another Forum and must admit i was impressed by the result.

An Irish patriot, tried and convicted of sedition?, is sentenced to 7 years in the Australian penal colony at Hobart, Van Diemans Land (now the state of Tasmania).

He then escapes and is one of the very few to succeed in the attempt. He makes his way to the United States and in due course becomes the Commanding General of a famous New York military unit.

His unit fights at Gettysburg etc, and after the Civil War he becomes the Governor of a US territory.

Who is he?

Thomas Meagher, commander of the Irish Brigade.

"Those Irish are crazy; they LIKE to fight!" - attributed to a Union Private.

He was the assistant governor of Montana. He fell into the Missouri river and drowned in 1867. Some say he was drunk. Meagher had a string of bad luck after Fredricksburg. The Irish Brigade was pretty used up after Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He resigned in a fit of temper because he wanted to raise more Irish, but they refused to accept his resignation at the time. He left the army in 1865.
