I saw a troop aboard top some kind of an armored vehicle (there was no 50 cal. up there with him) on a street in Iraq today (on TV, of course)...

Something about his rifle caught my eye, and I wonder what it is exactly.

At one point he had the weapon up to his eye, sighting over somewhere or other at something.

The thing he was looking into is what I have a question about though.

It was kind of a curved shaped thing, maybe 2" wide by 1 1/2" high and maybe 1/4" thick, seemingly built in to the barrel, right above what I guess is the breech?

I recognize that it is part of his sighting, but is it a scope type thing, or is it a cross hairs deal that he lines up with the little indicator sticking up on the tip of the barrel?

I'm just wondering if it is a lens-aided scope or a something else, and what kind of rifle that might be?

(With apologies for 1 ea. extremely non-technical parts designations)

Blue,

Can you say what TYPE of rifle is was...i.e. an M16A2 or an M4?

That may help>

I don't know enough about modern weapons to be sure, Rigger...

I can say though that the rifle did NOT have one of those "handles" on the top of it. About where the handle would be, was that curved eye piece, and no handle.

What caught my eye was that the one I'm talking about was one I had not seen before, and I have been watching as much as possible.

It was definitely a shoulder weapon... it seemed larger than the average rifle, but smaller than a BAR... dumb comparison, I know.

Maybe a M-209 or M-249. Would really need to see photo as well...Mark 19 is rather larger (I have a picture of M-19 and 249 in my gallery in photo, take a look there and see if they look similar).

out here

Doc -

I have zero idea of how to go to your photo gallery...

I know I could ID that weapon again if I could see a photo of it from the side.

Blue,

Doc Deane means the photo gallery here on the PF. Surely you know how to look at a members gallery.

No...

It was a long rifle, the sight was right above what I think must be the breech, it has a curved shape, sort of like half of a culvert, approx. 2 x 1 1/2 x 1/4" thick, the front end of it curves down toward the front end of the barrel.

Dang! I wish I knew how to post pictures...

Blue,
If you have a picture of it on your PC's hard disk somewhere, just hit the reply button in the lower right corner of the post, this one for example, and you'll see attach file in the lower left under the options. Hit the browse tab to the right, find the file and click on the file name and it should show up in the box next to the browse button and then just hit submit reply.

Where is there the best website I can look at to find pictures of contemporary military shoulder arms?

Maybe I can get at least a better verbal description for this thread.

Do you have a link I can use?

I'm still searching and asking around about this thing... current direction is to see if the sight is a Thermal or Starlight, mounted on some kind of M16 A4.
