Arty Sgt and Jerry D

Thanks for the welcome! For Arty Sgt., did you read "The Beast was out there?" If not, you can get a copy from the 1st Division Cantigny Museum in Wheaton, IL. Quite a book. The Bn Co, LTC Terry Allen, Jr. was KIA in the ambush. The ironic part is that his father was CG of the Big Red One in WWII.

One Six this is Mohawk Charlie 5, welcome. No I wasn?t the XO, just an NCO, our SOP was the XO stayed in base camp, in the rear with the gear. I ran his APC and sort of did his duties. Guess I was what the French would call an Aid de Camp. That was my call sign after Tet, prior to the end of February ?68 it was Charlie 2-5.
4th/ 23rd Infantry spent a little time in southern War Zone C, too much time in the Triangle, and good duty was riding Thunder Road, Highway 13. We worked with the Bloody One on a number of occasions, mostly with the ? Cav.
Didn?t you guys work near Pick Lock (sp), right on the edge of the Cambodian border? Not a good place. In ?67 Charles could fire his 107mm rockets from inside Cambodia and we were not suppose to fire back, into a ?neutral country?.
Did you ever make it down to Tay Ninh? A lovely little city but the base camp seemed to irritate the enemy. They were forever urging us to move.

Stay healthy,
Andy

The one thing I remember most about the 25th is that we used to feel sorry for you guys and all the heavy contacts you ran into. After I got home, I ran into a guy from the 25th and when I told him about that, he replied "Gee, we used to feel the same way about you." Go figure.

No, I never heard of the "pick lock"---was it in the fish hook area? We did make it into the Boi Loi and Ho Bo woods, which were in the 25th AO. We also give names to a lot of the places we worked, such as the Angel's Wing, Catcher's Mitt, Trapezoid, the mushroom, Snoopy's nose, Dog Leg Village, Claymore Corner, the testicles, etc. They were usually named after terrain features. Any sound familiar? I never got to Black Virgin Mountain, but on most of our CA's it sure was a prominent feature when the choppers hit altitude. I've heard lot's of bad stuff about that place.

Andy,

It was Prek Loc, will have to check spelling. That was our AO and where we made LZ Carolyn. Prek Loc was a former SF camp.

OneSix,

Welcome aboard bro. So nice to have another Big Red One alum around. I was with CCo 2nd Bn 8th Cav 1st Air Cav Div 69'. I also flew into Lai Khe once while on TDY with the 128th Assault Helo Co., "Tommahawks". We went to vist the Robin Hoods in Sherwood Forrest. Nice guys! I think you guys used the 128th a bunch over there but you would know more than I about that.

If your gonna be one.....

Airborne!

Thanks for the welcome.

Paco---I think you are the first person I have run into in 35 years who has ever hear of the Robinhoods and Sherwood Forest. I usually get a blank stare when I mention them. As I recall (my memory could be failing me here) they were located near Doctor Delta (Delta Med) and Lai Khe Dust Off.

onesix 07-02-2003 10:43 AM

oops!

PHO127. Sorry 'bout that.

lets see

One Six, no, I didn?t feel sorry for the 1st Division. Didn?t feel sorry for anyone, you played the hand you got dealt and I was busy playing my own cards. Well, maybe I did feel a little sorry for Jody. Must have been tough with all those ?extra? women around.
Yep, the Boi Loi and Hobo?s those were places we visited quite often. My first 9 months our base camp was Cu Chi, then we moved to Tay Ninh. Angel?s Wing AKA the Elephant Ear, the Trapezoid, sure. I?ve been told we were in the Mushroom and or the Top Hat also but some details escape me.

Packo, Prek Loc or however it?s spelled definitely was a SF base camp along with a good number of locals who really couldn?t make up their minds which side they were on. Think it was the second weekend during Tet some general decided the first ever ground force would take a Sunday drive to Prek Loc to re-supply the place. Sort of an ?in your face? to Charlie. The drive up there was somewhat difficult, the bad guys were quite rude, we only made that one trip.
I didn?t remember that Carolyn was in that area. Perhaps I had a cocktail or two when you mentioned that. Always remember our AO was visited by the 173rd before I got there, the 1st, 2nd B of the 101 and the 11th AC. However, the Air Cav working the same turf as the 25th just seems strange, always think of you guys fighting further north. Wait, someone took your picture in a chopper flying over the Black Virgin, OK, I should have remembered.

Stay healthy,
Andy
