You better believe I'm going to boycott that stamp. I buy stamps that have the American Flag, and Purple Heart Stamps.

This should be unconstitutional don't you think?

The U.S Postal Service has NOT issued, nor is it planning on issuing, a stamp commemorating Islam.

The EID stamp is ONE of a SERIES of stamps commemorating HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS around the world. Other stamps in the series are Kwanzaa, Hanukka, Thanksgiving, Cinco de Mayo, and Christmas.

The EID stamp commemorates the two major holidays of the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

The word "eid" is roughly equivalent to the English word "celebration" or "festival." The three-day Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of the month-long fasting of Ramadan; the three-day Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son in response to God's command.

The HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS stamp series was issued in 1998, before President Bush took office.

The EID stamp was issued BEFORE 9-11 and before the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The EID stamp is a regular First Class Postage issue, so the only financial impact of not buying the stamp will be on the employees of the U.S. Postal Service.

The EID stamp is featured on the WHITE HOUSE web page.

"I am pleased to send greetings to all of those celebrating Eid al-Fitr, the culmination of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan commemorates the revelation of God's word in the holy Koran to the prophet Mohammed ? a word that is read and recited with special attention and reverence during this season. In the past month, Muslims have fasted from food and water during daylight hours, in order to refocus their minds on faith and redirect their hearts toward charity.

Muslims worldwide have stretched out a hand of mercy and help to those most in need. Charity tables, at which the poor can break their fast, line the streets of cities and towns. And gifts of food, clothing, and money are distributed to ensure that all share in God's abundance. Muslims often invite members of other faiths to their festive meal at night, known as the iftar, demonstrating a spirit of tolerance.

During Eid al-Fitr, Muslims celebrate the completion of their fast and the blessings of renewed faith that have come with it. Customs vary between countries, from illuminating lanterns in Egypt, to lighting firecrackers in Pakistan, to inviting elders to traditional feasts in Niger. Around the world, families, neighbors, and friends gather to share traditional foods and congratulate each other on meeting the test of Ramadan.

The spirit behind this holiday reminds us that Islam brings hope and comfort to millions of people in my country, and to more than a billion people worldwide. Ramadan is also an occasion to remember that Islam gave birth to a rich civilization of learning that has benefited mankind.

Here in the United States, Muslims have made many contributions in business, science, law, medicine, education, and other fields. Muslim members of our Armed Forces, and of my Administration, are serving their fellow Americans with distinction, upholding our Nation's ideals of liberty and justice in a world at peace.

Laura joins me in sending our best wishes to Muslims across America, and throughout the world, for a joyous holiday. May the blessings you received during this Ramadan be with you in the year ahead."

Rigger- maybe so but I'm not going to buy it.

82Rigger 09-26-2005 10:30 AM

I would be surprised if you CAN still get it at the Post Offices.

It was issued almost five years ago at the 34 cent rate.

Boats 09-26-2005 10:31 AM

Maybe so but the stamp in the attachment from my Sister says 37 cents on it.

Robert J Ryan 09-26-2005 01:33 PM

If the US Gov't says One nation under God is unconstitutional, due to the word GOD, when is the Post Office (US POST OFFICE) isssuing stamps with a representation of a muslim god. God is God no matter what religion you practice. What about the song God Bless America is some one going to ask a judge to out law that song because it mentions GOD..

Boats 09-26-2005 01:38 PM

Isn't it amazing how the minority can rule the day.

82Rigger 09-26-2005 04:21 PM

The stamp celebrates a HOLIDAY, not a religion or a God.

Here is the original first issue:

The other stamps in the same Holiday Celebrations series are Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Cinco de Mayo, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Saw EID stamp last year and the year before and they were not in the stamp vending machine but available from the postal attendant (title?) at the counter, and in sheet form as I recall. There was an advertisement on the wall that featured the entire holiday series and I believe one could pick and choose which design to purchase without obligation to purchase any other design.

Sort of on topic, The last few years me and the wife have noticed that it is getting harder to find Christmas Cards that actually mention that Jesus was born as in "Merry Christmas" as the slogan or message. Now days the cards seem to go out of their way to "Wish you a Happy Holiday" or "Tis The Season" . All people who get the 25th off for Christmas get it off for the Symbolic Date of Jesus's Birthday and no matter how hard the Atheist try to remove all traces of Jesus from the Government I still have not seen one Atheist tell their boss No Thanks I won't take Double time to work today just pay me the Regular pay. Or even offer to pay their boss back for the paid day off :D seems a bit of hypocrisy on their part to me enjoying the Holiday/Day off but the rest of the year campaigning to rid the government of any an all traces of Religion no matter the situation. BTW for my own personal choice for Christmas Stamps if it doesn't have a Nativity Scene or the Mary and Jesus depiction I don't buy them. I will go so far as to get a Christmas Tree Stamp but thats as secular as I purchase to mail out Christmas cards with.So in conclusion I hope everyone has a Feliz Navidad, Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukkah :a:

Jerry,
Out of curiosity I looked at the Hallmark site to have a look at the 2005 holiday card selection and they do have a nice selection with Christian themes.

As a paradoxical aside, our neighbors across the northern border tout ?Secular humanism and moral relativity? as their ?official? way, truth and light and are officially ?Christian critical?; which means Government censorship and intervention in spiritual/religious matters. On the other hand, hodit, hodit, hold on a sec, it looks very much like they are going to allow Moslem Shira law within Moslem environments. It a nutshell, what that boils down to is that if anything goes bad in the family, anything, the women is the culprit and guilt is not the issue, only the degree of punishment. One recent case in the mid east I read about where the father-in-law raped his Son?s wife, but she was stoned to death for promiscuity and provoking the rape by being insolent, tiz the law. Stacked deck me thinks and so much for hue and cry about ?secular humanism?.

I"m not one to follow other religions too close, but are the mad bombers connected to abraham wanting to sacrifice his son or are they just flat insane.?

Jerry D 10-01-2005 12:53 AM

Scamps, thanks for the heads up on Hallmarks selection. I do most of my Christmas card shopping by donating to some good charities that send out nice Christmas Card packages of around 10-12 cards a box. Seems the charities that seem to send out the religious themed cards are Catholic Indian Schools in Montana and South Dakota. So, I like to support their schools and know where my donation is going .To teach the young'ins of our Country how to suceed in our country is the best cause I think now days. Plus they are nice enough to send out Thank you letters to let you know they appreciate the support.

As usua,l forwarded messages via email are 100% BULL SHIT, or just misguided. You can always go to www.snopes.com and check the search feature to be sure.

There are millions upon millions of folks who are Islamic who have nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism, and never will. One is a very good friend of mine at the Memphis Vet Center.

Dear Fellow Patriotic Americans,

REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of PanAm Flight 103,
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993,
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the Marine Barracks in Lebanon,
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the military Barracks in Saudi Arabia,
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the American Embassies in Africa,
REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the USS COLE.
REMEMBER the MUSLIM attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11/01.
REMEMBER all the AMERICAN lives that were lost in those vicious MUSLIM attacks.

Now the United States Postal Service REMEMBERS and HONORS the EID MUSLIM holiday season with a commemorative first class holiday postage stamp.

I strongly urge you to REMEMBER to adamantly and vocally BOYCOTT this stamp when purchasing your holiday stamps at the post office. To use this stamp would be a slap in the face to all those AMERICANS who died at the hands of those whom this stamp honors. I also strongly urge you to pass this along to every Patriotic AMERICAN you know, whether by email or otherwise.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Origins: The EID postage stamp described above was introduced by the United States Postal Service (at the then-current 34-cent rate) as part of their Holiday Celebrations Series on 1 September 2001, just ten days before the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. The EID stamp was reissued by the USPS in October 2002 at the new 37-cent rate.

The EID stamp is often mischaracterized as a "Christmas stamp" even though it has nothing to do with Christmas other than that it is part of a series of U.S. postage stamps commemorating several diverse celebrations (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Thanksgiving) which sometimes occur at roughly the same time of year. (The Holiday Celebrations Series of stamps also commemorates celebrations occurring at distinctly different times of the year, such as Cinco de Mayo.) The statement "[Muslims] don't even believe in Christ and they're getting their own Christmas stamp!" is nonsensical, akin to protesting Hanukkah stamps because "Jews don't even believe in Christ but they have their own Christmas stamp."

As the USPS describes the EID stamp:
The Eid stamp commemorates the two most important festivals ? or eids ? in the Islamic calendar: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. On these days, Muslims wish each other "Eid mubarak," the phrase featured in Islamic calligraphy on the stamp. "Eid mubarak" translates literally as "blessed festival," and can be paraphrased as "May your religious holiday be blessed." This phrase can be applied to both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
The word "eid" is roughly equivalent to the English word "celebration" or "festival." The three-day Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of the month-long fasting of Ramadan; the three-day Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael in response to God's command*, and it marks the end of Hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.

Should Americans boycott a stamp commemorating Islamic holidays? That's a personal decision, but the following facts may prove informative:
The EID stamp is an ordinary first-class postage stamp; all proceeds from its sale go to the USPS, not to any Muslim-related groups or organizations. Boycotting the EID stamp is a purely symbolic act with no financial impact on anyone.

The United States is home to an estimated 6 million Muslims, and according to the U.S. State Department, by the year 2010 the Muslim population of the United States is expected to surpass the Jewish population, making Islam the country's second-largest faith.

The USPS already issues stamps commemorating the Christian holiday of Christmas (with both religious and festive themes) and the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah as well as Kwanzaa.

> The American greeting card manufacturer Hallmark produces cards celebrating Eid al-Fitr. <<

The President of the United States, George W. Bush, has extended official greetings, issued messages, and participated in commemorations of both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (even after the September 11 attacks), and the White House web site promotes the EID stamp as well.
(*This is the reverse of Judeo-Christian tradition, which holds that Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice not Ishmael but his other son, Isaac.)
