Cold in the north

For all those Up north that were wondering, Last month, when winter was going to be hear, Just take a walk outside. It's hear.
Hears a cool thing to do if your in a -degree location of America. Get a small pan of boiling water, and take it outside and fling it hard into the air. It turns to ice and snow before it hits the ground. You can't just dump it , you have to throw it (just the water) pretty hard (to break up the water) . Then you might want to go back inside , cause the neighbors have just wrote down some stuff about you.

Ron

SparrowHawk62 02-06-2007 07:58 AM

Yup

Yeah, Ron it's finally gotten cold here in Lower New York State.
Single digit numbers with a wind chill well below zero.
Think I'll pass on tossing the water into the air, my noisy neighbors think I'm crazy as it is!

Keith_Hixson 02-06-2007 08:28 AM

We've had a colder than average winter.

Our winter has been colder than average. But we haven't had extreme cold. We've had lots of near zero weather but nothing like we usually get. We've had lots of snow this year. Much more than normal. I'm ready for Spring. Snow on the ground since before Thanksgiving. That's a long time. I'm glad winter is finally moving East.

Wow, I'm feeling a little guilty for complaining that the low at my house was upper 50's. You just have to love sunny California.

Kinda guilty also 68 here today

Reported from Central Park 02/06/2007 12:51 PM EST
Temperature: 22?F -6?C
Conditions: Fair
Winds: W 8 MPH W 13 KPH
Relative Humidity: 29%
Barometer: 30.16 Falling
Visibility: 10.00 Miles 16.09 Kilometers
Feels Like: 13?F

Not to bad right now, I'm North of Central Park by about 75 miles so our temperature is a bit cooler, 19 degrees F. That knocks the wind chill down to at least 10 degrees F.
Might get to the freezing mark by Friday, wow, almost a heat wave.

39mto39g 02-06-2007 10:53 AM

You know, Water is the only substance that expands when it gets hot and expands when it gets cold. Pretty strange. And it can't be compressed.

Yeah, it's some pretty wonderful stuff! Except when it get's into things like hydraulic lines, oil sumps, gasoline....

Boats 02-06-2007 11:48 AM

We got -2 now and 4-5" of snow falling right now and it doesn't look like it wants to stop anytime soon. Yesterday morning it was -11 (not a wind chill) add in 15-20 mph winds and now your cold. We've been lucky this year but normally about the 1st of Feb it begins to really chill out.

revwardoc 02-06-2007 12:05 PM

This morning it was 0 at my house; colder than my ex-wife's heart!

Damn glad I'm not at Great Lakes!~

Keith_Hixson 02-06-2007 12:34 PM

Ron,

Glacier Ice is compressed Ice. It weighs more for its size than other ice. It takes longer to melt also because its more compressed. So water or Ice can be compressed under long term weigh in a glacier.

Was just above 20 F this morning for the first time since the earth began beginning after last November elections. Maybe it?s time to plant some mango trees n? coco palms, go tropic, and rename the place ?Banana Flats?. That way when Northern California slides off into the ocean, I?ll be all set with tropical frontage property.

One place in northern Minnesota near me recorded a temp. of -42 yesterday morning. It is now -6 out right now.

DMZ-LT 02-06-2007 03:57 PM

Move.

Army_Brat84 02-06-2007 10:49 PM

Can't :). I have to finish my MA (if Texas Christian U. or Kansas State had given me funding, I would be there). Besides being around most of my family up here makes the cold worth it. I just like hearing you guys talk about the cold because I have most of you beat, though it is a dry cold, so it is not as bad. Now if I were back in IL and it was what it is outside now (-23) it would feel much worse.

Packo 02-07-2007 05:17 AM

Going to be close to 70 today.....but windy. Hate those wind chills. Probably be about 60 with the wind off the water. Brrrrr Come on Spring!

Colon

b3196 02-07-2007 06:01 AM

Colon
Temp hit a whopping 0 with 6 inches of snow. It was terrible. Had to go to the basement throw another log on the fire, open a fresh bottle of scotch, check the water temp in the hot tub. and enjoy the day off

Boats 02-07-2007 06:56 AM

Well we got 5.5" and its currently -5 going up to whopping 12 today. As long as the wind doesn't kick in it should be tolerable.

SparrowHawk62 02-07-2007 08:23 AM

Should get up to 20 degrees here today, can't wait for that heat wave on Friday when the predicted high will be Freezing, 32!

QM3steve 02-07-2007 12:02 PM

It's 16 right now.(15:00) The wind is about 10-20mph. Wind chill is about -2. A bit warmer than the Great Lakes area. Buffalo predicted another 2' before this ends...on top of 4' already.

Here's a helpful chart for those curious weather junkies.

SparrowHawk62 02-08-2007 10:45 AM

Man, Quarter Master, stow that chart, it's to nasty to look at!

b3196 02-08-2007 10:50 AM

I usually judge "cold" when your nose hairs freeze and your nose is running faster then you can lick it
bOOger

QM3steve 02-08-2007 05:35 PM

Sparrow,
The coldest I can recall in this area was Jan. 1994. I have a pic of the thermometer at -28. The day before it was -30. Without the wind.

Bob,
Cold is when it freezes in your mustache before you can lick it.

It's OK here in PA. Lows are in the +2 to + 8 and highs are about +15 to +19. Wind chills are -20 to -10, but this is winter.

Wish we could get some of the snow hitting upstate NY so I could get in some decent cross country skiing instead of getting out and running everyday.

Cold is OK. I could live in FL with my daughter any day but will never leave this area.

QM3steve 02-11-2007 04:09 PM

It's finally warm here...19.2deg. Oswego county, well north of here...(3 hours) has declard a state of emergency. 8'+ of snow and more than 12" more on the way. Another storm brewing in the Mississippi valley Monday. Should drop our first significant snowfall. Weather advisories are oout but time will tell.

16" of snow predicted for tomorrow and Wed. Dipping down to a balmy 3 for thursday though. I guess we're due. It's been a good summer.

covan 02-12-2007 05:06 PM

They're calling for about a foot or so here. Looks Like I get my wish to do some cross-country skiiing in this week and weekend.

Getting them waxed tonight and have a brand new pair of boots I got for my birthday last year and never got to wear because we had no snow after Christmas.

revwardoc 02-13-2007 11:31 AM

Ayah! Nor'eastah headin' ouwah way t'night. Might get 12 inches o' moah!

Robert Ryan 02-13-2007 11:37 AM

Saw on the news on TV about the cold back east. Man I'm glad I don't live in NYC anymore. It is in the 60's here in Elk Grove, CA, just a little cloudy though.

Robert, how easy we forget the wonders of winter! The frigging weather guessers have no clue how much of the white fluffy stuff will be spread across the Lovely Hudson Valley. Guess's range from seven to fourteen inches. Got the old snow thrower primed and ready to take it on!

Oh, I forgot to mention that's it's been warm today, just a hair below the freezing mark!

Boats 02-13-2007 12:01 PM

It's really blowing now. Gust to 35 to 40 mph. Tonight dropping to -2 again with this wind chill check QM 's chart. Got 6" more snow so far. Calling for snow all day today and tomorrow.

Now that outfit in New York getting 12' of snow would be the nut buster of all time for me - I think that would put me over the edge. Shoveling your drive is one thing but to shovel your roof now I'm not a happy camper.

QM3steve 02-13-2007 01:16 PM

Update on the weather...now the prediction is 20-30". It went from a winter storm warning to a heavy snow warning. Snowplow's ready and the hour drive to work is cancelled for tomorrow.

HEAVY SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM EST WEDNESDAY...

A HEAVY SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM EST WEDNESDAY.

SNOW WILL CONTINUE TO SPREAD NORTHEAST OVER THE AREA THIS EVENING...REACHING PENN YAN AND BINGHAMTON BETWEEN 5 AND 7 PM, AND SYRACUSE AND UTICA BETWEEN 9 PM AND MIDNIGHT. THE SNOW WILL BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES LATE TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY...BEFORE TAPERING OFF TO SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS WEDNESDAY EVENING. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS TONIGHT WILL RANGE FROM AROUND A FOOT IN THE CENTRAL SOUTHERN TIER OF NEW YORK AND IN BRADFORD COUNTY IN PENNSYLVANIA, TO AROUND 6 INCHES IN THE WESTERN MOHAWK VALLEY OF NEW YORK. ADDITIONAL HEAVY SNOW ON WEDNESDAY WILL RESULT IN TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 20 TO 30 INCHES BY WEDNESDAY EVENING.

IN ADDITION...GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 15 TO 25 MPH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON...CAUSING AREAS OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW AND POOR VISIBILITY.

Covan,
Hows the snow there?

Boats,
Never seen 8-10' of snow. Pics only. I think the tunneling to your car would be the icing on the cake. The most I can recall here is 36" in 9 hours two Christmas' ago. The attitude around here was "nah we're not gonna get it"...WHAM! We got it.

Robert Ryan 02-13-2007 01:30 PM

Yeah heard on the news that New York is expecting over 110 inches of snow this year, man this 6 and 1/2 feet of snow, I guess that is either up state or the entire state.

Rob, that's up by the Great Lakes region.
Carl is an (HS-15) AW1 Shipmate of mine, here's what he had to say at the Indy chat site:
"Thans for the concern. On the western end of the state Buffalo itself has not been hit too badly. South of town in the Lake
Erie "snow belt" they have had alot more. I could have used some of that white stuff during deer season. Now over to the eastern end of the state, in Lake Ontarios "snow belt" they have had some record amounts of snow. The difference being is Lake Ontario never freezes, allowing the air to pick up more water to dump as snow. When Lake Erie partially ices over, it reduces the snow on this end. I think there is still some open water on Erie. So theres still alot of Winter left and we still could get hit."

So it's all depends on where you hang your rabbit skin hat. We've only had a few inches here in the HUDSON VALLEY, (just above the WEST POINT area.)

SEATJERKER 02-13-2007 02:29 PM

no big deal,...

...

...we're looking @ 18- 24" tonight through tomorrow,...

...So,........................

...no big deal,...
