In an increasingly interconnected maritime domain, the US Navy's cyber arm - US Fleet Cyber Command - has launched a range of programmes aimed at protecting naval networks and training personnel to operate in a complex, rapidly evolving domain. Gerrard Cowan reports.

Today's operational environment has seen the US Navy (USN) become increasingly dependent on the interconnectivity between afloat forces and shore headquarters. This has been the case for decades, but stepped up a gear with the introduction of the IT-21 network initiative about 20 years ago. Since this was launched, the fleet has relied on Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity and is increasingly dependent on C5I capabilities to execute its missions.
