March 9 (UPI) -- Iran successfully test-fired a Hormuz-2 ballistic missile last week, the commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said Thursday.

Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh said during a speech the missile destroyed a floating target from about 820 feet, the state-run Tasnim News Agency reported.

Hormuz-2 is a naval ballistic missile that can hit floating targets up to about 1,000 feet and is similar to Khalij-e-Fars (Persian Gulf) ballistic missile in appearance.

On Monday, Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehqan warned its military is capable of surprising enemies if they strike against them. The Tasnin News Agency said the Islamic republic's defense doctrine is based on deterrence and not a threat to regional countries.

One day earlier, Iran tested the S-300 surface-to-air missile defense system, which the Islamic Republic purchased from Russia.

On Saturday in the Strait of Hormuz, the USNS Invincible was patrolling the regional waters and accompanied by three British Royal Navy ships when it was harassed by Iranian boats, which came within 600 yards, U.S. officials told Fox News.

Iran tested a Khorramshahr medium-range ballistic missile on Jan. 29 in apparent violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution. Iran said the tests were OK because they are not designed to carry a nuclear warhead.
