A French Woman Needs Your Help

Hello to everybody,

I am a frenck woman of 38 years old and I need your help.
I am looking for my grandfather who was an american officer during the World War II in France in 1944/1945. He was in the base of Couvron near the city of Laon.
He came from a city near the Michigan's Lake. He was fairhaired, he had blue eyes. Perhaps his firstname or nickname was Patrick, I am not sure, as you see I don't know a lot about him.
He met my grandmother : Bernadette Mabilotte nicknamed Dedette in a ball in Remies - a village near the base of Couvron.
He wanted to marry her at the end of the war but she refused : I don't know why ! He came back in USA in spring or summer 1945. He was still in Couvron in march 1945 because my mother was born on the 27 th of december 1945. My grandmother died in 1988 and always refused to tell us more about him.
Can you help me to find him ?
Can you tell this story to your friends, especially the veterans of the WWII ?
Thank you by advance Nathalie

Hello from France...

...There isn't a lot that we can do for you here, but to advise you to ??? , "take out an advertisement in the personal's in the largest newspaper in the "great lakes area / regional / newspapers with the information you have...
...seems like you have a lot there,... try the "Chicago tribune", see if you could get a reporter to do a "heartwarming story of a woman looking for her grandfather" ???,
..seems to be possibly of Irish decent, named Patrick, and Chicago is on Lake Mich...
...good luck...

Hello Seatjerker,

Thank you very much for your reply. You had a good idea. I didn't think about that. I am going to contact a reporter from "the Chicago Tribune" by the net. Probably, he will be interested by my story and will accept to help me.
God bless you
Best regards.
Nathalie

Hi Bob,

I didn't have answer from the Chicago Tribune, not yet ! I hope they will help me.
So, I am going to follow your advice. I will try the Detroit Free Press and the Flint Journal.
I thank you all very much.
I have a lot of supports of veterans (I put my thread in a lot of website of veterans).
In following my thread I have a contact with a veteran of the 366th Fighter Group and another one with a veteran of the 409th Bomb Group Light.
They are helping me.
It's great, I don't feel alone in my quest.
Thank you Bob for your compliment about my firstname.
Sincerely
Nathalie

i guess the best thing to do would be just get your map out, locate all the large cities all the way around the great lakes and send a message to each newspaper. start in new york and go all the way to minnesota. there are many, many large towns with irish communities, if in fact he was irish.

good luck!

Nathalie, you may want to try posting messages on some genealogy boards. I've attached a link to such a board for Cook County, Illinois, USA, in which Chicago is located. Genforum has boards for many locations, including but not limited to a board for each state in the US, as well as boards for many counties within those states. There are also boards for specific surnames. The best part? It's free. If you search around Genforum, you'll find boards for many, and probably ALL, of the areas about which you may be interested in searching.

I note that you didn't post your grandfather's name, and I assume that you do not know it. If you post on the genealogy sites, include as much information as possible.

I received replies to my inquries that allowed me to trace my grandmother's branch of the family tree all the way back through Sweden to Haracourt, France, in about 1560. (Jehen Godet, my 10th great grandfather, married Ann Heson in in France about 1610. In Sweden the name went to Gode, Goude, and Goode, and was changed to Goody in the US after 1900.)

Good luck! :D
