melody...just noticed you hail from the panhandle. I grew up not far from you in the Lawton, Ok area. Still get back there about once a year, not too much family left down there just some old friends.

Mike's really on the ball!!!

If you guys get his unit info lined out, I can make the request through the Network and ask for MPR's from NARA, so Melody can have names of guys that served with her uncle and I'll track them down for her...

God Bless Our Troops!!

Here is the info on my uncle, there is a pic of him on the post of mine in the Vietnam forum.

Olen Wayne Garrett, might of went by only Wayne.

He was born in Amarillo,TX May 12,1947. He was in the Army and a gunner on a helicopter. He was in the 129th Avn Co, 208th Avn Bn. He was a SP4. He entered the army in 65 and was discharged in Feb of 71. He served a little over 2 years in Vietnam. He received The Air Medal and a Purple Heart. The paper that I have had a fold in it when they copied it and it doesn't show all of his "decorations." I know he received the Air Medal in March of 68 for the period of Feb 10,1968 to Feb 17,1968.
His Specialty # and title are 11 E 20 Armor Crewman.

Melody,

Here's what I get from my databases:

# Name City State Age
1 OLEN WAYNE GARRETT AMARILLO TX 56
2 OLEN WAYNE GARRETT HURST TX 33
3 OLEN WAYNE GARRETT BEDFORD TX 33
4 OLEN W GARRETT CLARKSVILLE TN -

Texas Vitals show that he married this woman in 1968:

GARRETT OLEN WAYNE 21 HATFIELD THELMA LOUISE 17 1968 9 26 191 RANDALL 097293 1

And divorced her in 1974:

GARRETT OLEN W 26 THELMA L 22 1968 9 22 1974 6 26 68 ECTOR 01

Notice they divorced in Ector County...

What about Olen Jr.? Would he give you info? I may be able to locate him, too....

Oddly enough, I found a CMDR Olen Garrett in CA...

I doubt that it's him, but hey you never know!!

Garrett, Olen Cdr & Sue

San Andreas, CA 95249

I'll shoot off his info to Mary and make a request for his MPR's for the right time frame while he was in Nam and get his service numbers and then we can see if we can get the VA to foraward a letter for you...

I'll keep plugging and start fresh in the am... My eyeballs are about to fall out! HAHAHA!

Keep an eye out for me Melody!

Take Care,

Lisa aka Nam_Angel

Lisa, Thank you so much for all the info. He died in 2000 and I knew him. He just never was able to talk about his time over there. I just would like to know if there is somebody out there that could tell me a little about him when he was there. I have a copy of his records if that would help you.
Olen Jr served in Desert storm, we talk to him a few times o year and him and his father didn't always have the best relationship and Olen Sr never talked about it with anyone at all. He played his radio or TV loud all the time to drownd out his memories I think, at least he wished he could.

Melody,

Do I feel foolish ma'am!!

I was thinking I was searching for a living relative!

Been doing too much today and am obviously rum-dummy... :o)

Now I know what to do!!

See you tomorrow with the correct info...

I am so silly!

Lisa
