Ardennes...23 Dec 1944
 

On the morning of 23 December 1944, elements of the U.S. 3rd Armored Division were retreating from the Germans in the Ardennes Forest near Fraiture, Belgium. A sergeant in a tank destroyer spotted an American digging a foxhole in the frozen earth.
"Hey, buddy!", yelled the sergeant, "Are you crazy? The Krauts have broken out. We're being over-run!"
The GI, a Private First Class of Co. F, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, looked up and asked, "Are you looking for a safe place?"
"Yeah," answered the tanker.
"Well, Mac," he drawled, "just pull your vehicle in behind me.
I'm the 82nd Airborne and this is as far as the bastards are going."

Milt Lewis tells of how he and his men found an old barn and had a Christmas Eve Service. They all gathered in the little barn and sang Christmas Carols. Especially Silent Night. Milt was in the artillery and they were going to be on the move in the morning, "a great Christmas". Moving was the most dangerous time for an artillery unit and they had some real concerns. But the little service that Staff SGT Milt Lewis led gave them all strength for the task ahead.

It sounds like that PFC didn't scare worth a damn. Seems any good army always has a few of them. Glad to know God has given us our share.
Was the 82nd known as the devils in baggy pants or was that just the 101st?

Don't ever tangle with a bunch of crazies, you'll lose everytime. I would like to make a bet. The Germans never did get past that fox hole. Thank God we had brave men who knew how to take a stand and draw a line. A salute to all Airborne.
