MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif.(May 9, 2003) -- Approximately 165 Marines of the Marine Corps' oldest and most decorated active fighter attack squadron returned home to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar May 9.

Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 232's "Red Devils" deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom late in January.

A formation of F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets led the homecoming, with the main body arriving via commercial airliner.

Sarah E. Alles, wife of Col. Randolph D. Alles, commanding officer, Marine Aircraft Group 11, and their daughter waited along with hundreds of MAG-11 family members and friends.

"I'm just glad and thankful these planes and people weren't lost or injured and are now back home- - it's pretty remarkable-," she explained.

"It'll be nice to be able to talk to him face-to-face, hear his experiences and have him around again," the Wheaton, Ill., native added.

For Mrs. Alles, like many other spouses, this was one of her husband's many deployments but his first time away from the family since his marriage 4 years ago.

The squadron sent the 10 jets over in support of the war, and returned to a crowd that cheered with support, waving signs, flags, and homemade banners.

The jets arrived, thundering overhead, then landed with military precision, as they aligned before the crowd.

Col. Alles reunited with his wife and 2-year-old daughter, Ellen.

The tow-headed little girl looked up at her own, hero - also known as daddy, and matched his welcoming smile with one of her own.

Surrounded by media during the reunion, he took a brief moment to answer questions. He concluded saying, "The flight was eventful as we had to fly through some tornados, but it's great to be back," promptly returning his attention to the smallest Alles.

Roger
