Past Conflicts:

Information on this page will be updated every Friday once data collection is complete to provide accurate, timely, and consistent information to our stakeholders and the general public.

Last Update: June 21, 2019

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency's mission is to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing personnel from past conflicts to their families and the nation. Within this mission, we search for missing personnel from World War II (WWII), the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Gulf Wars, and other recent conflicts. Our research and operational missions include coordination with hundreds of countries and municipalities around the world.

As this map shows, at present, more than 82,000 Americans remain missing from WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and the Gulf Wars/other conflicts. Out of the 82,000 missing, 75% of the losses are located in the Indo-Pacific, and over 41,000 of the missing are presumed lost at sea (i.e. ship losses, known aircraft water losses, etc.).

* Reflects actual number still unaccounted-for. PMKOR database count is slightly higher due to several entries pending administrative review.

* As part of DPAA's data consolidation effort we have validated the number of missing from WWII. This new figure reflects the elimination of duplicative records, erroneous entries, and information that demonstrates the individual was properly accounted for by the appropriate authorities before our Agency inherited those responsibilities.

A Prayer For POWs and MIAs - Written by Harrison House

Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray for those who have been taken captive in war. Give them the courage to persevere and also the knowledge that they have not been forgotten.
May our nation find ways to rescue them safely and quickly. Guide our political negotiators in their resolute efforts to gain the freedom of these courageous people.
I pray that they will not be used as pawns to the advantage of our enemies.
When their freedom is restored, let our POWs walk with pride and dignity because of the suffering they have endured.
I ask for more efficient ways of tracing and identifying those who are missing in action. Let them not be forgotten, fill them with the hope of freedom and the knowledge that their loved ones and comrades anxiously await their return.
Lord, I pray that You give each missing soldier courage and strength to persevere. Give them peace in knowing You'll never leave them. I pray that You clear their minds of any worry or anxiety so they may focus on finding their way to safety.
Lord, I pray and believe You will bring each soldier back to safety.

Amen.

Another by: Abraham Lincoln:

"I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."
—Abraham Lincoln, 16th U.S. President

Personal note: It goes to show that war's are common place upon this Earth. The losses of such fine men and women (and the many innocent civvies) who lost their lives over grievances amongst the powers to be. Let us not forget those fallen and lost as we are but a race of people who seem to fashion success by destroying their neighbors. Is this truly mans best answer to succeed by destroying the only world we have to live on? Do we all not have a conscience that haunts us later in our lives. Are Our Leader's so endowed to create such devastation amongst the people of this earth? It seems man's destiny is still in doubt and the even today we see these conflicts and wars in the news daily.
