RIOT police were attacked by petrol bombs as they escorted a 12th of July parade through a notorious flashpoint in Belfast last night.
Angry nationalists also threw a blast bomb, bricks, bottles and other missiles at officers and at Orangemen on the march.
Trouble erupted as the annual parade made its way past the Ardoyne shops in the north of the city.
Police fired baton rounds and deployed a water cannon in a bid to control the rioters.
A female police officer was taken to hospital after being struck by a missile. Other officers were also injured in the disorder.
Earlier, around 60 demonstrators who had blocked the road in a sit-down protest were forcibly removed by officers in body armour.
The flashpoint was one of several across Ulster, including disturbances in Armagh and Lurgan.
In clashes on Sunday night, two policemen and a policewoman were shot by a masked man who emerged from a crowd of nationalists during traditional Protestant 11th Night celebrations.
More than 20 police officers were hurt in the trouble.
There was sporadic violence across Northern Ireland yesterday connected to the Orange walks.
In another area of Belfast, police were attacked by petrol bombers as a march passed another traditional flashpoint at the Ormeau bridge. Elsewhere in the city, a hijacked bus containing a suspicious device was abandoned outside Woodburn police station. It was later declared a hoax.
In Portrush, a four-year-old boy was injured when he was hit on the head with a bottle thrown by youths returning from a 12th of July commemoration.
And in Lurgan, County Armagh, youths tried to set fire to a Belfast to Dublin train as it stopped at a level crossing. The driver managed to steer the train to safety.
Police also came under attack from petrol bombers in the town.
A vehicle was set on fire in Armagh city as a large crowd of youths gathered.
Last night, Sinn Fein Assembly member for north Belfast Gerry Kelly said: "The rioting this evening is wrong, counterproductive and should not have happened."
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Alistair Finlay said the violent scenes were unacceptable.
He said long-term solutions must be found to ease tensions and reduce trouble.
