In 1945, Syracuse veteran raised an American flag over Tokyo, enraging Gen. MacArthur

It might be one of the most famous photographs ever taken of a Syracuse resident. Taken on Sept. 3, 1945, it shows World War II soldier Bernard "Bud" Stapleton raising the first American flag over Tokyo, just one day after the formal Japanese surrender.
