Beijing, Jan 7 (Prensa Latina) China reiterated Monday its demand to the United States to cease sending warships to its territorial waters without permission and warned it will take the necessary measures to defend its sovereignty.

Lu Kang, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, said at a press conference that his government formally protested to the representatives of that nation in Beijing against the illegal entry of the USS McCampbell missile destroyer into the South China Sea on Monday.

The Chinese army immediately sent ships and planes to identify it and warn it to leave the area.

Lu stressed that it is a violation of China's sovereignty and laws, as well as international regulations.

The destroyer's presence constitutes a threat to peace, security and order in the area, and so, Beijing will continue to take all appropriate measures to defend its interests there.

This is the first illegal incursion by the United States into the South China Sea this year and it coincides with the renewal of negotiations to solve the economic-trade conflict.

The spokesman, questioned whether this maneuver will affect the talks, considered both powers have the responsibility to guarantee an environment free of tensions to solve any dispute.

Different U.S. ships invaded this maritime space in 2018, with the argument of defending freedom of navigation.

Besides the quick condemnations by the top authorities in Beijing, the People's Liberation Army of China held trainings under war conditions there as these activities continued.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the main goal of the maneuvers was to strengthen air and naval commands' combat capabilities with intensive air, sea and land exercises, as well as to better prepare them to safeguard national sovereignty and security.
