Vietnam/Military Question
Okay - so I am VERY new to this.
My grandfather was in the 17th AST HEL CO 308th COMBAT BN 1st AV DIV from 68-69 during Vietnam and the 59th AVN BN 101st AB DIV after that (?). Can someone please tell me what that means? I don't want to sound ignorant, but apparently I am in this area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

The 59th Aviation Battalion could have belonged to the 101st Airborne Division - this does make sense! The 101st Airborne is the famous "Screaming Eagles" of WW II fame. |
SuperScout is right the 1st Av Div did not exsist it is the 1st Avn Brigade, also if you google the 308th Cmt Bn you will find what I did. Here is the link.

Okay, thank you! I misspelled a few things!
I received the print out from the National Personnel Records Center yesterday afternoon - It says: "17th Aslt Hel Co USARPAC-RVN" and the other one states, "HHC 159th ASHB 101st ABN DIV (Aml) USARPAC" I will Google some more, but I really do appreciate your help! Since it's public record, I attached the document -just in case I messed up (again). I found this link, but this site wouldn't let me post it... the Liftmaster Battalion. Is this a possiblity? "The 159th Assault Support Helicopter Battalion was formed on 1 July 1968 from the dissolved 308th Combat Aviation Battalion. Organized as the medium and heavy lift Assault Support Helicopter Battalion of the 101st Airborne Division, the unit was eventually composed of three CH-47 companies (Pachyderms - A Company, formerly the 200th Medium Lift Helicopter Company; Varsity - B Company, formerly the 272nd Medium Lift Helicopter Company; Playtex - C Co, formerly 293rd Medium Lift Helicopter Company) and 1 CH-54 company (Hurricanes - 478th Heavy Lift Company)." |
Check out this link, it has all aviation units from Vietnam listed there.
