On this date !!!!

July 13th, 14th in Korea. We were on a mission, in front of our lines about 2 miles, seeking the enemy to capture for intelligence purposes. About 4:00 a.m., it hit the fan and the fight was on. After about 15 minutes, some of had to leave the battle to remove some of the wounded. One, a 6' 3', about 210 lbs., had to be carried as a grenade hit him on his rear-end and he couldn't use his legs. After carrying, (RUNNING) with him for that distance, one can get awfully tired. He was taken care of by the corpsman, and shipped out. Then and only then did two of us realize that we had been hit also. The corpsman tended to us, and said, "I can get you back to the ship, but don't know if you can come back to this unit". Told him to keep wrapping as no one wanted to go to another unit. Wrote a letter home that day, hoping it would get home before the telegram. The very next day, we were relieved from the lines for Corps., reserve. Needless to say if we'd know that, no one would have volunteered to go on that patrol. But when you're in that type environment, you don't think along the lines of a normal human being. In that type positon, with nothing to do, and looking for something to break the monotomy, we had to VOLUNTEER to go on that encounter.
"Strange things happen to strange people in strange places", a quote by a buddy of mine who was KIA on April 24, '51.
