On Friday, May 6 British culture was brought inside the gates to Lakenheath Middle School for U.K. Day. More than 50 presenters, experts in every manner of British history, culture and sport set up interactive stations inside the school’s classrooms.
The presenters shared their knowledge on scone-making, medieval weapons and executions, storytelling, bagpiping and archaeology excavating. Some students who had never played cricket got to learn about the famous British past-time when the local cricket club converted the gym into a cricket pitch.
“Basically the day is to get the kids the experience of British culture and history,” commented the school’s host-nation teacher Fiona Guyer, creator of the U.K. Day. She explained that students do get some of the culture when they go on field trips but with funds tight field trips are limited and with a specialty day like U.K. Day they get to experience more at one time.
Students also enjoyed the opportunity getting to practice the art of calligraphy, creating t-shirt designs, and even tasting some Haggis.
Parent volunteer and PTO President Shannon Wheeler explained that the day was a fun way for the students to learn and confesses that she has a blast volunteering for the event. Throughout the year the PTO holds fundraisers to help fund the U.K. Day event and Guyer is “extremely grateful” for their effort.
Guyer believes the day has become quite an institution for the students and faculty and hopes to be able to continue the tradition for many more years to come.
