Secretary Nielsen Meets with Border Sheriffs to Discuss Border Security, Continued Partnerships

On July 23, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen met with border state sheriffs and law enforcement officials in Washington, DC to continue an ongoing dialogue on border security and the Department of Homeland Security’s commitment to working with local law enforcement officials. Secretary Nielsen, who was also joined by representatives from the National Sheriffs’ Association, Arizona Sheriffs’ Association, Southwest Border Sheriffs’ Association, and Western State Sheriffs’ Association, reiterated her commitment to working with state and local law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of the American people.

During the conversation, the group discussed ways in which we can work together to secure the southwest border. Secretary Nielsen stated that DHS would continue to enhance border security and immigration policies based upon the sheriff community’s unique perspectives and recommendations. The sheriffs highlighted several stories regarding the dangers along the border and reiterated the need to enforce the law and enhance border security.

Secretary Nielsen also thanked those participating in DHS’ 287(g) program, which allows for important collaborations between DHS and state and local partners to ensure that the safety of our communities is upheld and the sanctity of our laws respected.
