The Ebola virus has spread to a large city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a development the World Health Organization is calling "concerning" and a "game changer" that will make public health efforts more challenging.

The virus has spread to Mbandaka, a city with more than 1.2 million residents. The case, which was confirmed by lab tests from the Congo's Ministry of Health, is in a patient who was more than 90 miles away from where the current outbreak is, in Bikoro, an area that is difficult to get to.

The case was confirmed as health officials are sending shipments of an experimental vaccine to the area, where 44 Ebola cases have been reported and 23 people have died.

"This is a concerning development, but we now have better tools than ever before to combat Ebola," said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general. “WHO and our partners are taking decisive action to stop further spread of the virus."

Peter Salama, WHO's deputy director, on Twitter called the spread a "game changer" in the outbreak.

WHO has sent 30 experts to the area to monitor the spread of the virus. Ebola can be deadly when it isn't treated, causing diarrhea, bleeding on the body and damage to the immune system and organs. A patient who is infected receives an IV and is monitored for electrolyte balance and adequate oxygen.

The largest outbreak of Ebola occurred from 2014 to 2016, killing more than 11,300 people in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, and also reaching the U.S.
