WAR-set to music

Here are some scores for war (though the possibilities are endless):
"The 1812 Overture": A bit obvious, but a real crowd pleaser.
"Camptown Races": For when the war drags.
Pachelbel's "Canon": For firing on civilians-who-might-not-be-civilians.
"War (What's It Good For)": When a little levity is needed.
George Crumb's "Black Angels": Ideal for delivery of smart and not-so-smart bombs.
"Imagine": For those spectators somewhat irked by war.
Queen's "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions": For the closing ceremonies.

Mama, if you could see me now
I'm not the boy you knew in Macon town
They found a uniform about my size
It's a little big, I guess, but that's all right
Mama, if you could see me now.

Mama, they're treatin' me right well
The men all say I brought this good luck spell
I am the mascot of the ninth brigade
They will not march unless I lead the way
Mama, they're treatin' me right well

Mama, I do not have a gun
I'm only lucky when I'm bangin' on my drum
But I skinned a rabbit for the cook last night
And he said that I could keep his Bowie knife
Mama, I do not have a gun

Oh, mama, I lost my Arrowhead
It was big enough to strike a bobcat dead
I must have dropped it when I climbed that tree
Yankee fires as far as I could see
Mama, I lost my Arrowhead

Mama, the troops are fallin' in
And we must move while we've still got the wind
The scouts are fanning out like whooperwills
Today we're marching over Bloody Hill
Mama, the troops are fallin' in.

Oh, mama, I never thought I'd run
But something happened when I saw those Yankees come
And I've been running now a week or two
Too ashamed to run back home to you
Mama, I never thought I'd run.

Music

Riding around on APC's we had the chance to do things that legs didn't. We had one of those 12 or 15" army speakers mounted on top of our vehicle and an old real to real tape deck mounted next to our PRC48 radio.

It's hard to sneak up on people in a 13 ton tracked vehicle so we went the other way. When Charles was shooting we'd turn on the tape. We had a few of these tapes but they all started with the song "Respect" and ending with "All You Need Is Love". Respect always got the guys pumped up, even the rednecks, and All You Need Is Love was, well it was battle field humor.

It's funny, to this day I can't hear "Respect" without hearing AK fire.

Stay healthy,
Andy

Metallica and Grateful Dead were my choices. Metallica to get pumped up and Dead to remind me of good things back home. Must have listened to the same two tapes hundreds of times :)

I always most enjoyed "Also Sprach Zarathustra", and Vaughan Williams' "Lark Ascending"...
