13-pdr QF Field Gun
 

Here you can find photos of a surviving specimen of the British 13-pounder (Quick Firing) Gun, the smaller cousin of the famous famous 18-pounder QF. The 76.2mm 13-pdr QF was developed after the Boer War, as a lighter piece to be used in support of cavalry. When WW1 broke out it was the standard gun of the Royal Horse Artillery. This small and light (1.014 kg) gun proved it's worth as long as the war was in it's mobile phase, but when tghe trench stalemate set in, it was soon found wanting. Especially the maximum range of some 5.300 meters was deemed to be too short, and the 13-pdr was phased out of service in the Horse Artillery. Many of these were, however, converted into AA guns, and served in this role for the remainder of the war.

The gun on the pictures can be seen in the Imperial War Museum, and is a survivor indeed: the battle damage is quite authentic, dating back to fighting at Néry in France on the 1st of September 1914, an action where three Victoria Crossese were won. In this fierce fight 3 13-pounders from "L"-Battery, 1st Cavalry Brigade, faced 12 German guns on a high ground some 500 yards away. Two of the three British guns were almost immediately knocked out, but the third continued to fire, served by Captain Edward Bradbury and a wounded Sergeant by the name of Nelson. When Sergeant Major George Dorell joined the pair, Bradbury went off to get more ammo, but was mortally wounded by a German grenade. The remaining two continued to fire until all their ammo was gone. When British reinforcements arrived, the Germans withdrew, leaving most their guns behind.
