David: This looks like part of a bigger map? My ancestor, New Orleans lawyer Adj. Lt. John Nixon (1811 helped start N.O. Masonic lodge), born MaGuiresbridge Co. Fermanagh, N. Ireland, 1787, was in DeJean's 1st Louisiana Militia, and fought on the far west bank until over-run by the British, when he spiked his two light cannon (once in War Trophy Room, Whitehall, London, England?) and retreated. He was the attorney for the City of New Orleans, until he removed to Biloxi and owned the Nixon House Hotel there. His son-in-law, Peregrine "Perry" Snowden Warfield of Georgetown, D.C. (kin of Bessie Warfield who wed King Edward VII) was also N.O. City Attorney. Perry died in middle age and I seek his obituary and grave. Nixon died Biloxi June 4, 1849 and was entombed in the old Biloxi City Cemetery next to the waterfront highway. Did his small tomb (perhaps four others in it) survive hurricane Katrina? If it did not, he's entitled to a U.S. government tombstone which I'd be glad to do the paperwork on. Was Nixon in the old Battle of New Orleans survivors society; where are it's membership records? My kinsman was Choctaw chief, Capt. Peter Juzan, inn keeper of Juzan Lake, Miss., who led 52 Choctaws from the swamp against the British right flank in the Battle of New Orleans. After the war Peter was Choctaw conductor of the Indian removal west. His brother William Juzan was Chickasaw conductor. Our in-common ancestor is "Don Pedro", Sieur Pierre Gabrial Francois de Juzan, His Spanish Majesty's Indian Commissioner to Alabama and DAR ally Patriot as in the Revolution, he ran Spanish service agents amongst the Indians against British agents. His father was French marine, aide Maj. Pierre Gabriel de Juzan, killed in combat against Chickasaws, in the 1730's First Battle of Ackia, Tupelo, Mississippi Military District. His Canadian marine kinsman killed Second Battle of Ackia, were Capt. Antoine de Tonty and Maj. Pierre-Charles de Liette. Maj. Juzans mother was Michelle de Liete de Juzan of "the King's cabins", Versailles, France. Who were other Choctaws at the Battle of New Orleans. Seek other kin of Capt. At one point during the battle, British general Peckenham and his staff watched as a buckskin clad American climbed on top of the defensive works and took at them with his rifle. They laughed at the thought that the American actually thought he could hit one of them at that distance. They saw him fire, then one of the general's aides went down. It so astonished them that they didn't move as they watched the marksman reload. He fired again and another aide went down. They then decided that withdrawal to a safer distance might be prudent, so they did, with a newfound respect for American marksmanship.
