Tsunami to hit Japan

06:10 Central time 11-16-2006 a Tsunami is to hit the northern coast of Japan, Caused by an 8.1 earthquake.
'Where did the ocean go?' Lets go look.

Its supposed to have a 6foot wave, Now that may not sound like much cause we see 6 foot waves all the time, The difference in a wind generated wave and a Tsunami wave is big. A wind generated 6 foot wave may carry a 10 meter Base of water a Tsunami 6 foot wave may carry a 60 mile base of water, Thats why the water just keeps coming inland when the wave hits.

The California coast is also expecting some Wave activity from Waves about 7 to 8 feet our local news reported. I am 80 miles away from San Francisco so I don't think I have much to worry about.

They have down graded

Now they are predicting only 2 ft or 3 ft waves in California and the west coast If combined with high tides and winds it may cause very minor damage.

VICTORIA (CP) - Emergency officials in British Columbia have lifted a tsunami watch for the province's "outer coast."

Officials say no impacts are expected from any tsunami wave in B.C. following a massive 8.1-magnitude earthquake off Japan.

The Provincial Emergency Co-ordination Centre says preliminary reports from Japan and Alaska indicate any wave that might reach coastal B.C. "will be very small."

The tsunami watch covered the B.C. north and central coasts to the northern tip of Vancouver Island, as well as the west coast of Vancouver Island south to Sombrio Point.

The Greater Victoria and Greater Vancouver areas, including Juan de Fuca Strait and Georgia Strait, as well as the U.S. West Coast south to Mexico, were not affected by the watch.

Tsunami watches are issued as an advance alert to areas that could be affected by a seismic wave.
