NORFOLK, Va. (Tribune News Service) — Rear Adm. Charles W. "Chip" Rock took over leadership of the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic following a change-of-command ceremony Friday.

Rock replaces Rear Adm. John C. "Jack" Scorby Jr., who is retiring from Navy service after 36 years. He is relocating to Florida, the Navy said in a news release.

Scorby took over command of the region, which includes 14 installations across 20 states – from Wisconsin to North Carolina – in March, 2016. Scorby championed energy conservation across the region and the Navy's Fleet and Family Support Program.

Rock previously served as the 90th commandant of Naval District Washington. He is from Baldwinsville, N.Y., and received his commission in 1987 through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program at Texas A&M University, according to Navy news releases. Rock has also served as chief of staff for the Navy Installations Command and in a number of other posts, including commanding officer of U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo, in Japan.
