They all want to be VN veterans

My 46 year old Nephew was here visiting from CA this week end. He was a little kid when I came home in 1969 but he joined the Navy in the 1980's [which is true]. His ship shelled the Vietnam coast 5 times. Then there was the secret mission when they landed Navy Seals in rubber boats in 1980 and 5 or 6 ships were shelling the coast the next morning and the seals never returned. [I think I'm feeling sick]

A legend in his own mind

I wasn't alive then but its odd how it was so unpopular to be a VN vet back when ya'll came home and were treated so badly and now so many want to take the glory for the real job ya'll did.

Gaggle of boobs.

A better fit might be the 1975 shoot out with the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia where the Coral Sea, CVA 43, landed some Marines, but no SEALs. But that only lasted a couple days and I don?t recall if any of the escort Destroyers where shooting up the place or not. The Marines got strung out real bad so I suppose some 5/56 support fire was happing.
Biker groups are famious for pretend VN Vets. Met one fellow who claimed to have been a Marine but wore the CIB. ;) Boy howdy did he have a tall tale to tell but never heard of Phu bi or MEF III digs in Da Nang. :ek: Hard to miss or not know about if one was a Marine in I Corps as he claimed. Oh well, maybe somewhere along the line he got a clue about the CIB and get a look at a VN I Corp sector map. Kind of tidy up the act a bit ya see.

Steve,

next time you see your nephew, slap him upside the head for me. Wait. Where in CA does he live? Maybe I'll slap him myself.

Scamp: Yep. Over the years I've seen several bikers with a mix 'n match bunch of badges and insignias on their jackets. Years ago ['76] ran into one wearing an 82nd patch and CIB drinking with his buddies in a bar in Whitefish, MT. Said he'd been in Nam with them in '67 [we got there FEB68]. I just grinned and asked him who he was with. He just said "the 82nd." I said, "I know, but what PIR?" He just gave me a blank look, and mumbled something about forgetting alot of things. I said, "You're a f-ckin' liar and if you want, we can step outside and you can try to change my mind about you." He, or his buddies, didn't budge. I took my beer and moved to the far end of the bar with the two other loggers I came in with. They gulped their beers about as fast as they could, and left with half a pitcher still sitting there. The bartender asked me how I knew he was a fake, and I told him my background. He laughed and got us about three-fourths drunk for free before we convinced him we had to go. After that, I could never pay for a beer there if he was behind the bar :cl: .

Changing the subject. My daughter will be moving to Berkley some time this year. I'm sure I'll be visiting this year or next. It must be close to you?

Steve,

I live in N. Oakland. Berkeley is about a mile up the street from me. If you want me to check in on her before you get here, just give the word. Although, it sounds like you have family near by. I'll be looking forward to buying you a beer, Bud. Keep me posted.
