Henry Nicholas John Gunther who died on November 11, 1918

The last soldier to be killed in action during the First World War was Henry Nicholas John Gunther.

An American soldier, he died on November 11, 1918 at 10.59am, just one minute before the Armistice was to take effect.


Gunther, who was of German-American heritage, was involved in a final charge against German troops and was hit by a German bullet.

He died in the Argonne region of France aged 23, after single-handedly charging an enemy machine gun nest.


The soldier, from Baltimore, had been drafted in a year earlier.

After he was found out for writing a letter home criticising the war, he was determined to make up for it and spent the last weeks of the conflict volunteering for dangerous projects, according to Military History Now.

Gunther, a private, was posthumously awarded the rank of sergeant.

He was also posthumously given the Distinguished Service Cross - the second highest military award that can be handed to a member of the US army.

It is awarded for extreme gallantry and risk of life in combat with an enemy.
