Dynamic duo: US Navy sees resurrected 2nd Fleet as competitive counter in North Atlantic

In reconstituting the 2nd Fleet, the US Navy is counting on the reorganised force to keep the growing Russian North Atlantic force in check. Michael Fabey reports.

The re-establishment of the US 2nd Fleet is more than just a shifting of responsibilities, ships, and aircraft on the service's organisational chart. It represents an integral part of the US Navy's (USN's) efforts to combat Russia, which has re-established itself as a peer naval competitor, particularly in the undersea realm of the North Atlantic.

The standing up of the revamped 2nd Fleet can be simply summarised "as a dynamic response to a dynamic security environment", Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson said.
