seems there should be a way to protect that fan.

I don't see why they couldn't use a strong "grid" of some sort over the intake.

Jet engines need a massive amount of air to work properly. Putting a grid in front of the turbine blades would cause overheating and make it even more fuel inefficient, not to mention what it would do to the aerodynamics.
